What you'll be doing
The Chief Cardiac Technologist leads the cardiac diagnostics team with clinical and technical expertise, overseeing the delivery of high-quality cardiac diagnostic services.
The role includes responsibility for advanced assessments, surveillance, and reporting of implantable cardiac devices (pacemakers, ICDs), Holter monitoring, exercise stress testing, and stress echocardiography.
The Chief Cardiac Technologist provides support to the sonography service with their ability to perform transthoracic echocardiograms, assist with transesophageal echocardiograms, ultrasound-guided pericardiocentesis.
Provide specialist clinical advice, mentorship and professional support to cardiac diagnostic services across the Mid North Coast Local Health District, including supporting the implementation and orientation of future in-house Cardiac Sonographer roles at Port Macquarie Base Hospital and Kempsey District Hospital, as required.
As such the position requires the chief cardiac technologist to have detailed knowledge in cardiac anatomy, physiology and pathology to identify and escalate when there are variations in anatomy and pathological processes.
About You
You present yourself as someone who brings advanced training, deep technical capability and confident clinical judgement to every cardiac diagnostic setting. With a postgraduate qualification in Sonography—or equivalent competencies recognised by your employer—you operate as a fully accredited cardiac sonographer registered with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry. You move comfortably across modalities, performing Transthoracic, Transesophageal and Stress/Dobutamine/Contrast Echocardiography with the kind of precision that comes from extensive hands‑on experience.
Your skill set extends well beyond scanning. You handle Holter monitor processing, exercise stress testing, cardiac catheter lab hemodynamic monitoring and surveillance of implantable pacemakers, defibrillators and loop recorders with a level of autonomy that reflects both competence and confidence. You pair this clinical breadth with strong digital capability, navigating cardiac reporting programs and electronic medical record systems with ease.
Colleagues rely on your clinical reasoning, especially during complex diagnostic procedures where your judgement directly shapes patient outcomes. You contribute not only through practice but through leadership—developing service protocols, refining procedures and mentoring technologists and technicians. You communicate clearly, negotiate effectively and organise workloads so staff and equipment are used efficiently, ensuring the service runs smoothly and patients receive timely, high‑quality care.
