Primary objective
Through the management of critical data and systems, this role coordinates the provision of operational and strategic
intelligence to Bushfires NT management and staff and to other stakeholders inside and outside the NTPS, including
volunteer bushfire brigades and federal agencies.
Context statement
Bushfires NT is responsible for providing fire management support to rural stakeholders and volunteer bushfire brigades
across the Northern Territory, such as fire management planning, training, mitigation, and suppression activities to ensure
best practice fire management.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Lead the strategic definition of Bushfires NT’s intelligence requirements and the selection and implementation of
solutions to meet those requirements.
2. Undertake regular reviews of data quality and controls, including educating frontline people and enabling managers to
enhance the quality of data captured by their teams through methods such as exception reports and notifications.
3. Develop subject matter expertise in generating intelligence for management, staff and stakeholders, including how to
share that intelligence with users in the field and with non-NTG users such as volunteers and landowners.
4. Work with NTFES colleagues to define agency-level requirements and to develop solutions to meet those requirements,
including providing back up to colleagues for intelligence solutions that NTFRS and NTES use.
5. Plan and execute projects to improve Bushfires NT’s intelligence capabilities and practices, including GIS, remote and
mobile access to intelligence and access by non-NTG stakeholders.
6. Represent Bushfires NT on committees and working parties, such as AFAC strategic groups, involved in enhancing
emergency management intelligence policy and practice.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Significant knowledge of solutions for online data capture and sharing and for reporting and analysis of quantitative and
qualitative data, including GIS/spatial data.
2. Significant experience in maintaining and improving data quality, including both system controls and user support.
3. Ability to undertake research and analysis to identify emerging trends in bushfires and emergency management
intelligence.
4. Experience of coaching and supporting others, including those with limited technology skills, to help them capture and
analyse data.
5. Proven capacity to communicate complex matters confidently in a clear, concise and articulate manner and ability to
effectively negotiate with a range of stakeholders.
6. Strong strategic, analytical and research skills with the ability to apply these in a variety of contexts to achieve sustainable
outcomes.
7. Confidence and ability to work under pressure supporting incident management teams while handling conflicting
priorities to deliver quality outcomes.
