Director of Nursing | Aurukun
You want remote... this is remote!
I guess you're probably wondering... where on earth is Aurukun?
So let's be upfront - Aurukun is a very remote Aboriginal community on the western side of Cape York. You fly in, and during the wet season travel can sometimes be delayed. Life here is quieter and simpler....there's no big shopping centres or food delivery but in return you get a close-knit community, a short commute, and a lifestyle that's very different from the city.
Aurukun is a small, strong community. People who do well here are people who come with respect, patience, openness, and a willingness to listen and learn.
About the role
We're looking for a Director of Nursing to lead the Aurukun Primary Health Care Centre. You will be working in the second largest primary health care team in the Torres and Cape HHS with a team of around 22 dedicated staff and you play an important role in the community. We're not looking for someone to come in and change the world. We're looking for a steady, practical leader who is willing to live in community, support the team, work with the community, and keep the service running well.
This role needs someone who:
Has strong clinical skills and is comfortable working in a remote setting where you are the senior clinician
Is a strong communicator who can build good relationships with staff, community, and other services
Is a steady leader - calm, fair, and supportive
Is happy to roll up their sleeves and be part of the team
Is adaptable and practical when things don't go to plan
Understands that remote health is very different to metro health
Has a sense of humour (it helps)
**Important to know: There isn't always a doctor on site, so you need to be clinically confident and comfortable making decisions in a remote primary health care environment.
Permanent Role - but let's talk about what works for you
We know committing to a permanent remote role is a big decision, so we're open to having a conversation about what this could look like:
Permanent full time
Permanent with additional leave blocks
Come for a year and see if it's for you!
Talk to us - we're open to different ideas.
What you get
Remote roles should come with real support, and this one does:
Accommodation provided
Relocation assistance
Remote incentives
5 weeks annual leave
17.5% leave loading Workplace benefits | Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service | Salary and benefits | Careers (health.qld.gov.au)
Professional development opportunities (minimum 10 days)
A dedicated staff gym on site
A role where you will use your full range of clinical and leadership skills
Before you apply
We're going to be very honest - before you apply, please Google Aurukun, look at where it is on the map. This is a very remote community and remote living isn't for everyone and that's okay. We just want you to have a clear picture of what life and work here is really like so you can make the right decision for you.
