Power Systems Engineer
Help Shape the Future of Energy in NSW
The electricity system in New South Wales is undergoing one of the most significant transformations in its history. As the grid transitions to a diverse mix of renewable energy Transgrid is at the centre of ensuring a reliable, secure and resilient power system for the future.
We are seeking a Power Systems Engineer to join our Network Transition Planning team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to technical modelling and analysis that supports medium-term network planning and helps bridge long-term strategic planning with near-term system operations.
Working alongside experienced engineers and industry specialists, you will help identify and assess emerging operational challenges associated with the energy transition and contribute to solutions that support system security, reliability and resilience across the National Electricity Market (NEM).
About the Role
As a Power Systems Engineer, you will undertake technical studies and analysis to support network transition planning activities and provide insights into the changing operating environment of the NSW transmission system.
Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting steady-state and dynamic power system studies, including load flow, contingency and stability assessments using tools such as PSSE, PSCAD and/or DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
- Maintaining, validating and documenting study models, scenarios and datasets to ensure quality, traceability and version control.
- Supporting assessments of emerging trends including Renewable Energy Zones (REZs), data centres, electric vehicles, distributed PV and changing demand patterns.
- Assisting with medium-term transition planning activities, including options assessment, risk identification, initiative planning and tracking.
- Monitoring emerging system conditions such as minimum operational demand, generation changes and major project delivery impacts.
About You
You are an analytical and motivated engineer with a passion for power systems and the energy transition. You enjoy solving complex technical problems, working collaboratively and developing practical solutions that deliver value.
You will bring:
- A degree qualification in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Approximately 1–4 years of experience in power system analysis, modelling, planning, outage studies, operations or a related field.
- Exposure to power system simulation tools such as PSSE, PSCAD, PowerFactory or similar.
- Understanding of transmission networks, power system operations, network constraints and power system dynamics.
- Experience or demonstrated capability in scripting and automation using Python, MATLAB or similar programming languages.
- Experience presenting technical information to stakeholders and working groups is advantageous.
Graduate and early-career candidates with strong relevant exposure to power system studies and modelling are encouraged to apply.
