Primary objective
The Intake and Administration Officer assists the Community Justice Centre (CJC) to provide fair, accessible, effective and
culturally safe dispute resolution services by responding to enquiries, completing intakes, working with the team to manage
cases and providing administrative support for all Centre operations.
Context statement
The CJC offers mediation, community peacemaking, restorative conferencing and training services across the Northern
Territory. This position is the first point of contact with the CJC and is required to build relationships with service users to
understand their needs and experiences and assist with the management of their dispute. The position requires a solid
understanding of the diverse cultures of the Northern Territory.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Manage dispute assistance enquiries from members of the public, mediation participants and a range of stakeholders.
2. Complete intake interviews, including explaining dispute resolution processes and completing an initial assessment of
safety, risk and suitability for mediation.
3. Organise appropriate referrals into and out of the CJC and create case files using an electronic client management
system.
4. Lead case management, including regular contact with participants, mediators and CJC staff to prepare for mediations
and conferences and preparation of court reports.
5. Coordinate training services including promotion, registrations, bookings and communications.
6. Provide high-level administrative support including purchasing goods and services, managing timesheets and payments,
assisting with travel arrangements and managing maintenance and WHS requirements.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds.
2. Strong cultural awareness and understanding of the historical and current social issues affecting Aboriginal peoples in
the Northern Territory.
3. Ability to build relationships and manage conflict with empathy and respect, and an understanding of trauma-informed
practice.
4. Proven ability to multi-task and prioritise workloads with minimal supervision.
5. Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and to remain impartial.
6. Willingness to complete accredited training in mediation.
Desirable
1. Qualifications or demonstrated experience in a field relevant to dispute resolution.
2. An ability to speak one or more Aboriginal languages of the Northern Territory and/or experience working with Aboriginal
people living in remote communities.
