Primary objective
Lead the development, delivery and management of innovative horticultural research, development and extension (RD&E)
programs that enhance the productivity, profitability, sustainability and resilience of Northern Territory horticulture industries
across all regions. Working collaboratively with Plant Industries’ leadership, industry stakeholders and research partners, the role
identifies emerging opportunities, secures investment, and delivers science-based solutions that support industry growth across
the Darwin, Katherine/Daly and Alice Springs regions.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Lead the development and delivery of horticultural RD&E programs that address industry priorities and opportunities.
2. Secure and manage research projects, including budgets, resources, reporting and stakeholder engagement, to deliver agreed
outcomes.
3. Develop and maintain effective partnerships with industry, government, research organisations and funding bodies; and
contribute to extension coordination in the region.
4. Translate research outcomes into practical solutions and extension activities that improve industry productivity, profitability
and sustainability.
5. Prepare and communicate high-quality scientific, technical and industry-focused outputs, including reports and publications.
6. Represent Plant Industries at regional, national and international meetings, forums and conferences.
7. Lead and support staff in accordance with Northern Territory Government values, Work Health and Safety requirements, and
sound people-management practices.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Bachelor degree in Horticultural Science or a closely related discipline.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of Australian horticultural production systems and the factors influencing industry productivity,
sustainability and growth.
3. Demonstrated experience in designing, leading and delivering horticultural RD&E projects and translating outcomes into
industry practice.
4. Demonstrated ability to develop, secure funding for, manage and report on research projects and collaborative initiatives.
5. Highly developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to work effectively with industry,
government, research organisations and Aboriginal stakeholders.
6. Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
7. Understanding of Aboriginal economic development issues, experience with contemporary computer applications, and a
current Class C driver's licence or equivalent.
Desirable
1. Postgraduate qualifications and research experience relevant to the position.
2. Demonstrated experience in achieving positive outcomes through stakeholder engagement.
