About the role
Provides nursing/midwifery services across a range of clinical settings, progressing from competent to proficient practice. Accepts accountability for own practice, delegated activities, and supporting less experienced staff. Assists the Nurse/Midwife Unit Manager with leadership responsibilities, including staffing, rostering, recruitment, performance management, resource planning, and implementation of practice changes, while promoting continuity and consistency of care.
Key duties of the role
Provides proficient, person-centred nursing/midwifery care and oversees daily care delivery, ensuring appropriate patient outcomes and safe clinical practice within the team/unit.
Supports the Nurse/Midwife Unit Manager in operational, clinical, and education activities, including service coordination, problem-solving, and change management processes.
Contributes to a positive learning environment through clinical teaching, supervision of students and junior staff, and promotion of reflective practice and professional development.
Participates in quality improvement activities including clinical audits, research, and evidence-based practice to enhance patient outcomes and service delivery.
Provides shift-by-shift leadership, facilitates patient flow, acts as a clinical resource, and promotes continuity and consistency of care across the service.
Skills and Experience
Registered or eligible for registration as a Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, holding or eligible to hold a current practising certificate.
Registered Nurse/Midwife with at least 3 years post-registration experience or currently classified at Clinical Nurse/Midwife level, with demonstrated clinical competence.
Strong communication, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
Proven ability to prioritise workload, meet deadlines, work with minimal supervision, and supervise students, enrolled nurses, and less experienced staff.
Sound knowledge of relevant legislation, professional standards, ethics, quality improvement systems, and contemporary nursing/midwifery practice.
