CMTEDD is seeking an experienced and strategic leader to fill the role of Director, Data and AI within the CIO Branch. This role is responsible for leading the strategic optimisation of data assets and the safe, effective adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) across the Directorate.
Reporting to the Deputy Chief Information Officer, you will lead a multidisciplinary function to strengthen data governance, uplift organisational capability, and deliver high-quality data, reporting and AI services. You will play a key role in shaping data and AI maturity across the Directorate and contributing to whole-of-government priorities.
You will work closely with senior stakeholders to provide authoritative advice, drive innovation, and ensure that data and AI initiatives deliver measurable public value while managing risk.
What you will do
Key responsibilities include:

Lead and oversee a portfolio of data and AI initiatives aligned to Directorate and whole-of-government priorities

Use data skills to deliver measurable improvements in existing service quality, efficiency and business outcomes.

Improve data governance maturity, including privacy-centred data sharing and ethical AI practices

Oversee delivery of data platforms, analytics services, reporting solutions, and AI-enabled capabilities

Maintain and grow key organisational assets, including data catalogues, registers, and governance artefacts

Lead capability uplift initiatives to improve data literacy and AI understanding across the Directorate

Provide high-level strategic advice, briefing material and reporting to executives and senior stakeholders

Build strong relationships across government and represent CMTEDD in relevant forums and communities of practice

Support procurement, vendor engagement and product governance for data, analytics and AI platforms

Contribute to planning and prioritisation to ensure delivery aligns with the branch objectives and delivers continuous improvement
Eligibility/Other requirements: Formal qualifications in business administration, Information Architecture, AI and / or Information Technology would be highly regarded.
Notes: This is a temporary position available for a period of five weeks, with the possibility of extension up to six months. This position is available to ACT Government officers and employees only. A Merit Pool may be established from this selection process and used to fill identical vacancies over the next 12 months. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only. Opportunities for flexible working options could include hybrid working, being a combination of working from home, designated office based and FlexiSpace working locations across the ACT, part-time hours, job-sharing, flexible start, and finish times.
