About the role:
The Deputy Chief Psychiatrist - Forensic has a leadership function in the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist (OCP) and acts on behalf of the Chief Psychiatrist in their absence. This role supports the Chief Psychiatrist in their role, which is defined in section 266 of the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022 (the Act) as:
- providing clinical leadership and expert clinical advice to clinical mental health service providers
- promoting the highest standard of clinical practices and care in clinical mental health service providers
- promoting the rights of persons receiving mental health and wellbeing services from clinical mental health service providers
- providing advice to the Minister and the Health Secretary about the provision of mental health and wellbeing services by clinical mental health service providers.
As part of this, the Chief Psychiatrist delegates their powers and duties to the Deputy Chief Psychiatrist (other than the power of delegation).

About you:
- A senior psychiatrist expert with clinical knowledge and experience of forensic mental health?
- Able to articulate policy and provide clinical leadership to strengthen the quality and safety of service delivery across the forensic mental health sector?
- Able to communicate with a broad range of stakeholders and work across clinical, non-clinical and public sector settings?
- Registration as a medical practitioner in the specialty of psychiatry by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
- Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists
- Comprehensive experience in clinical practice in the public mental health system as a consultant psychiatrist, ideally at least part in forensic settings.
