The Assistant Commissioner, Operational Support Command is a senior executive role within Queensland Corrective Services, reporting directly to the Deputy Commissioner, Custodial Operations. As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the role provides strategic leadership, governance and assurance across high-risk operational domains that support safe, modern and effective custodial operations statewide.
Operational Support Command is the enabling command for Custodial Operations, overseeing complex and high-risk portfolios including statewide security services, intelligence capability, the Escort and Security Branch, Dog Squad operations, radiation safety compliance, the State Armourer function, emergency management capability, incident response models, industries portfolio, and whole-of-system capacity management.
The Assistant Commissioner sets a clear multi-year strategic direction for the Command, ensuring aligned priorities, consistent practice, and strengthened risk controls across the custodial network. The role leads operating model consolidation for aligned functions, embedding accountability arrangements, escalation pathways and performance expectations that sustain safe and reliable service delivery.
A key responsibility includes oversight of the Capacity Management Group, ensuring evidence-based system views, configuration options and decision-support tools (including CMAP and dashboards) that inform executive prioritisation and future planning. The role provides timely, evidence-based risk briefings and strategic advice to the Deputy Commissioner, Commissioner and Minister on emerging pressures across security, emergency management, escort operations and system capacity.
The Assistant Commissioner assures statewide governance for intelligence, emergency management and incident response models, including regulated radiation safety compliance and weapons/security equipment stewardship. This includes oversight of inventory controls, audit and reconciliation, secure handling and storage compliance, procurement planning and continuous improvement.
The role leads the Industries Portfolio, strengthening commercial performance, industry standards, prisoner employment pathways and capability uplift across large scale custodial industries operations. It also ensures consistent standards, training governance and workforce readiness for specialist correctional functions.
The Assistant Commissioner builds and sustains high-trust relationships across QCS divisions, government partners and justice system stakeholders, resolving system-level issues and enabling coordinated outcomes. The role drives accountability through fit-for-purpose governance, reporting and assurance arrangements, maintaining executive line-of-sight over delivery, risk, compliance and capability maturity.
The position requires strong strategic leadership, sound governance, evidence based decision-making, and the ability to lead change in complex operational environments. The incumbent may be required to work outside normal hours or travel to other locations.
