Primary objective
Provide technical advice to ensure the management of weeds is an integral component of land management in the Northern
Territory and ensure compliance with the Weeds Management Act 2001 (the Act) and relevant procedures and guidelines
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Participate in the development, implementation and review of weed management strategies and plans at a property,
catchment or regional scale.
2. Provide advice, including weed identification, plant ecology, integrated weed management techniques, and ground and
aerial survey methods to a range of stakeholders.
3. Educate land managers on their legislative responsibilities under the Act, implement monitoring and inspection programs
and perform compliance and enforcement duties under the Act.
4. Identify and survey weed infestations, including collection and collation of accurate field data to inform weed
management decisions.
5. Coordinate, conduct and provide detailed reports on strategic control of priority weed infestations and undertake related
duties, including emergency responses.
6. Manage and prepare reports for internal and externally funded projects.
7. Provide advice and direction to technical staff to ensure work programs are completed in a safe and timely manner.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Relevant qualification or demonstrated experience in natural resource management or agricultural science or extensive
experience relevant to the key duties and responsibilities.
2. Experience in the delivery of weed management advice and in the development of strategic weed or natural resource
management plans and programs, including administration of legislation and regulatory activities.
3. Analyse information to inform evidence based decisions and apply legislation in a practical context.
4. Demonstrated communication skills, both oral and written, to deal with complex issues, including negotiating with
stakeholders, liaising with project collaborators and reporting on weed management issues.
5. Ability to manage projects and to work with minimal supervision to achieve outcomes.
6. Experience in the safe use, handling and application of a broad range of herbicides and other relevant field equipment.
7. Ability to work autonomously and as an effective team member under a range of field and office-based conditions and
the ability to work effectively in remote localities under harsh climatic conditions for extended periods.
8. Current NT driver licence or equivalent, Senior First Aid and chemical user accreditation or ability to obtain.
Desirable
1. Experience in the use of Geographic Information Systems
2. Certificate IV in Government Investigations
