Alexander Symonds is looking for a dynamic and experienced GIS Manager to lead our talented GIS team. This can be a part time or full time role. You will be responsible for their professional development as well as overseeing projects, optimising operational processes and educating the business on the exciting opportunities GIS can open.
This role is key in the diversification of our business, and you’ll work closely with colleagues to drive the integration of GIS with our other services. These include cadastral, engineering, and construction surveying, underground utility mapping, aerial capture and 3D laser scanning and modelling.
The role will expose you to diverse sectors like civil construction, commercial, mining, energy, and property and you will have the chance to work with peers to develop new, innovative GIS services and solutions for these markets.
We are looking for someone who can:
- Lead a team of GIS data analysts, fostering their professional growth and lifting their technical, project management and business acumen.
- Advocate for safety and quality outcomes, conduct performance reviews, and create career development plans.
- Be the first point of contact for providing senior technical advice and trouble-shooting.
- Bring a deep understanding of the ESRI software suite and a knowledge of data governance, management and analysis best practices.
- Manage the delivery of large &/or complex GIS projects.
- Oversee smaller and medium projects being managed by team members by providing guidance, budget checks and quality assessments.
- Develop and refine tools, systems, and processes to improve efficiency across technical GIS workflows.
- Assist with the preparation of quotations and contribute to tenders
- Educate the broader business on the value and capabilities of GIS.
- Contribute to the creation of GIS-focussed resources (e.g. training modules and marketing materials) to increase GIS’s exposure.
- Engage regular contact with internal peers/colleagues and external Clients to understand their business needs.
- Grow the pipeline of GIS projects and contribute to the preparation of quotations and tender responses.

Essential
- Strong and empathetic leadership skills with a passion for mentoring and technical development.
- Hands-on experience with GIS software, particularly the ESRI suite.
- Excellent understanding of data governance and data management best practices.
- Unrestricted Australian working rights

- Experience managing technical teams.
- Knowledge of authoritative government and third-party data sources.
- Familiarity with surveying fundamentals.
