What you’ll be doing
As a Provisional Fellow in Trauma Surgery at St George Hospital you will:
Gain experience in the management of critically injured trauma patients
Observe a fully integrated trauma system and understand the way in which these systems improve outcomes
Gain enhanced skills in operative and non-operative management of critically injured patients
Participate in the multidisciplinary management of trauma
Participate in the General Surgical On Call Roster.
Involvement in trauma education and clinical research is actively encouraged.

St. George Hospital is one of the major Level 1 Trauma services in NSW. The Department of Trauma Surgery provides state-of-the-art emergency trauma and critical care for injured patients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Almost 1800 trauma patients are admitted annually, with over 350 of these patients classed as major trauma. Most of these patients sustain multisystem injuries, which are admitted under a dedicated Trauma Admitting Bed Card. The Trauma Team co-ordinates the management of these patients with other specialty services and maintains care through until discharge or transfer for rehabilitation.
The Trauma Service undertakes surgical repair of complex chest wall injuries and is one of the busiest rib fixation services in NSW and is in the process of becoming a Collaborative Centre with the Chest Wall Injury Society.
The Trauma Service operates within a modern purpose-built facility, which includes:
- Onsite integrated helipad capable of receiving helicopters
- Three major trauma resuscitation / theatre bays with imaging
- A specialised Trauma ward
- 36 funded (52 physical) state of the art ICU beds in four PODs with designated trauma beds with full bedside monitoring
- A state-of-the-art hybrid theatre incorporating a fully functional CT scanner, angiography suite and operating theatre, a first in a major Australian Trauma Centre. Code Crimson patients – (exsanguinating patients transferred by the Retrieval Service), are transferred directly to OR1, bypassing ED where required.
St George Hospital is a major tertiary and principal teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales, with 627 beds and a reputation for clinical excellence. - MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- At least five years post graduate experience in public hospital service (or equivalent)
- Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS)
- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised, complex clinical environment utilizing excellent clinical skills and judgment, particularly as they relate to managing critically injured patients.
- Demonstrated teamwork, time management and problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated interest in Trauma Surgery or Acute Surgery, with experience in the operative/non-operative management of life and limb-threatening injuries.
- EMST/ATLS currency preferably at Instructor level. Completion of DSTC is desirable. Demonstrated interest in education, and evidence of previous participation as an educator.
