We’re seeking an experienced engineering leader to lead our new Transport Department and shape the future of transport across Darebin.
About the role:
This is a unique opportunity to build capability, embed high-performance culture and deliver meaningful improvements that make a real difference to our community.
You’ll lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for transport engineering, transport planning, road safety programs, and school crossing operations while driving continuous improvements and strategic outcomes.
You will:
- Establish and Lead a High-Performing Transport Department
Build and embed a clear vision, structure and culture for Darebin’s newly created Transport Department, fostering accountability, high performance and an empowering team environment.
- Deliver a Contemporary Transport Strategy
Partner with key stakeholders to co-create and implement Darebin’s Transport Strategy that responds to significant population growth and aligns with Council priorities and community needs.
- Transform Service Delivery and Operations
Drive operational excellence by standardising service delivery, improving responsiveness, enhancing customer experience, embedding engineering best practice, and implementing robust performance measures.
- Reset and Strengthen Project Delivery
Strengthen transport project delivery capabilities, establish clear governance and accountability frameworks, and successfully implement key Council decisions and transport initiatives.
- Drive Organisational Change and Performance Uplift
Lead significant workforce and performance improvements, raising standards, developing capability and ensuring the department is equipped to meet Darebin’s future transport challenges and opportunities.
About you:
You are a proven engineering leader with a passion for transport and a track record of leading high-performing teams through change. An exceptional communicator, you bring the confidence and credibility to influence across all levels of an organisation, from frontline teams to executive leaders, Councillors and community stakeholders.
You have substantial experience managing operational services and delivering outcomes in complex environments, balancing strategic thinking with a strong focus on execution. You know how to create clear expectations, build accountability, manage performance and develop team capability, while fostering an inclusive and empowering workplace culture.
Most importantly, you are committed to delivering great customer and community outcomes. You thrive on tackling challenging issues, driving continuous improvement and shaping the future of places and spaces through innovative transport solutions.
To succeed in this role, you will bring:
- Significant leadership experience in engineering, transport, and infrastructure.
