Senior Leading Hand Maintenance

About this opportunity
Reporting to the Supervisor Roads & Drainage, you will take responsibility for leading and coordinating field-based crews delivering road and drainage maintenance and construction works across the region.
This role is ideal for an experienced Leading Hand who thrives in a fast-paced outdoor environment and can balance hands-on plant operation with strong leadership, planning and decision-making capability.
You will:
- Lead and supervise a work crew, ensuring safe, efficient and high-quality delivery of programmed and responsive maintenance works
- Plan and coordinate daily works, resources and plant to achieve operational outcomes
- Provide on-site leadership, technical advice and problem-solving support
- Maintain a strong safety culture, including leading WHS practices and mentoring team members
- Operate and maintain a range of civil construction plant and equipment
- Monitor site performance, productivity, and service delivery outcomes
- Liaise with internal stakeholders and the community, representing Council professionally on site
- Support forward works planning and, where required, step into higher duties to support the Supervisor
What you will bring
We are looking for a confident and experienced leader who can work independently and deliver results in the field.
You will demonstrate:
- Proven experience leading crews in road and drainage maintenance or civil construction environments
- Strong ability to allocate work, coordinate resources, and manage competing priorities on site
- Well-developed experience operating a range of civil plant (e.g. grader, loader, roller, excavator), with a strong focus on safe operation and maintenance
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and survey information
- Sound communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders and team members
- Experience using work order systems, mobile technology, and corporate systems for data collection and reporting
- A strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement
Qualifications & Requirements
Essential:
- Certificate III in Civil Construction (or equivalent relevant experience)
- General Construction Induction (White Card)
- Traffic Management Implementation (TMI), or willingness to obtain
- Current QLD ‘C’ Class Driver Licence (or interstate equivalent)
Highly regarded:
- Certificate IV in Civil Construction
- Heavy Rigid (HR) Licence or plant operation competencies (grader, loader, etc.)
- Experience delivering maintenance works in a local government or performance-based contract environment
