Position overview
The Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, supporting and maintaining reliable, secure and scalable telecommunications and IT infrastructure.
The role works across network, compute, storage, virtualisation and telecommunications environments, supporting both internal systems and customer-facing platforms. The Infrastructure Engineer will contribute to turnkey infrastructure projects throughout their lifecycle—from requirements gathering and solution design through to implementation, testing, deployment, operational handover and ongoing support.
The successful candidate will be technically capable, customer focused and comfortable working with internal teams, customers, vendors and technology partners in complex production environments.
Key responsibilities
Infrastructure engineering and delivery
- Design, configure, implement and maintain physical, virtual based infrastructure.
- Install, configure and support servers, operating systems, virtualisation platforms, storage and backup solutions.
- Design and support network environments, data centre and cloud network environments.
- Configure and maintain network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers and VPN services.
- Support telecommunications platforms and services, including IP-based networks, mobile or fixed network infrastructure, network management systems and associated operational support systems.
- Translate business and technical requirements into practical infrastructure solutions.
- Prepare infrastructure designs, implementation plans, configuration documentation and test procedures.
- Participate in infrastructure migrations, upgrades, integrations and technology refresh programs.
- Ensure solutions meet agreed performance, availability, scalability, security and supportability requirements.
Operations and technical support
- Monitor infrastructure performance, availability, capacity and security.
- Investigate and resolve incidents, service degradation and infrastructure faults.
- Perform root-cause analysis and implement corrective and preventative actions.
- Provide Level 2 and Level 3 technical support for infrastructure-related issues.
- Manage infrastructure changes in accordance with established change-management processes.
- Perform system patching, upgrades, vulnerability remediation and routine maintenance.
- Maintain backup, recovery and disaster-recovery capabilities and participate in recovery testing.
- Contribute to capacity planning, system optimisation and continuous service improvement.
- Participate in an after-hours support or on-call roster where required.
Security and compliance
- Apply security-by-design principles to infrastructure solutions.
- Implement and maintain access controls, network segmentation, system hardening and secure configuration standards.
- Assist with vulnerability assessments, security reviews, audits and remediation activities.
- Ensure infrastructure is operated in accordance with organisational policies, customer requirements and applicable industry standards.
- Maintain accurate configuration and asset information.
Automation and continuous improvement
- Identify opportunities to automate infrastructure provisioning, configuration, monitoring and operational activities.
- Develop and maintain scripts, templates and infrastructure-as-code where appropriate.
- Improve infrastructure reliability, operational efficiency and deployment consistency.
- Evaluate new technologies and provide recommendations based on technical and business requirements.
Documentation and stakeholder engagement
- Assist in producing and maintaining solution designs, network diagrams, build documents, operating procedures, support guides and configuration records.
- Work collaboratively with solution architects, software engineers, security specialists, project managers, service-management teams and customer representatives.
- Coordinate technical activities with customers, equipment vendors and delivery partners.
- Communicate technical issues, risks and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Support project estimation, planning, risk assessment and status reporting.
- Provide knowledge transfer and technical guidance to operational and customer-support teams.
Qualifications and experience
- Tertiary qualification in information technology, telecommunications, engineering, computer science or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
- Demonstrated experience in an infrastructure engineering, network engineering, systems engineering or telecommunications engineering role.
- Strong knowledge of networking technologies and protocols,
- Experience administering Windows and/or Linux server environments.
- Experience with virtualisation technologies such as VMware, Hyper-V or equivalent platforms.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure
- Experience with infrastructure monitoring, logging, backup and disaster-recovery solutions.
- Understanding of high-availability, redundancy, resilience and business-continuity principles.
- Experience troubleshooting complex infrastructure issues across multiple technology layers.
- Experience delivering infrastructure within controlled production and change-management environments.
- Strong technical documentation and communication skills.
Desirable experience
- Experience working within the telecommunications industry or supporting carrier-grade infrastructure.
- Knowledge of mobile, fixed, IP, transmission or core telecommunications networks.
- Familiarity with telecommunications protocols, network management systems, service-assurance tools.
- Knowledge of container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code and automation tools such as Terraform, Ansible, PowerShell or Python.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps delivery practices.
- Awareness of ITIL service-management practices.
- Experience working in customer-facing project or managed-service environments.
- Relevant industry knowledge, such as Cisco, Microsoft, VMware, Red Hat, Fortinet or ITIL.

Pay: $100,000.00 – $150,000.00 per year
