Position Title: High School Maths Tutor
EST is seeking a private High School Maths Tutor…

We’re looking for an empathetic, enthusiastic, and independent team member to join our small team as a High School Maths Tutor! This is a role for you to flex your Maths skills by working closely with students to help them think critically, strengthen their study skills and teach them resilience through an important era of their lives. You’ll be working closely with me (Cathy) to bring Elevate Specialist Tuitions' vision to life. As you progress in your own tutoring journey, there are further opportunities for you to advance in your career into higher positions within Elevate Specialist Tuition.
Expect to start with 1-4 hours of tutoring each week (roughly 1-4 students), with the opportunity to grow as your schedule permits. You will need to be able to travel to in-person classes and will need reliable access to a car or public transport. Some students may prefer remote classes. You should have access to WiFi, your own computer, and a smartphone with a data plan.
We are hoping to have this role begin with us by July 6th or sooner.
Details on the High School Maths Tutor Role
The perks :
- Contractor hourly rate between $35-50 AUD for one-on-one tutoring, depending on your experience
- Between $50-$90 for small group tutoring, depending on number of students

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Tutoring Dedication:
- Conduct engaging, weekly Maths tutoring sessions for high school students by building a personal connection with the student
- Develop personalised learning plans tailored to each student's unique needs and goals
- Use engaging teaching methods such as using the socratic method to guide students and visual examples to build genuine connection and rapport with students
- Establish clear expectations and rules between students to ensure that you are both working collaboratively towards a goal
Progress Tracking:
- Monitor and report on students' progress, adjusting teaching strategies as needed
- Maintain detailed records of sessions, progress reports, and other required documentation
- Break bigger goals down into weekly, manageable and clear steps for each student
Curriculum Confidence:
- Stay current with the Year 7-12 NSW curriculum trends and changes in Maths
- Use EST resources alongside your own for developing a personalised lesson plan
- Be involved with EST's training workshops and get familiar with EST resources
Student Guidance and Support:
- Offer kind and clear feedback to progress students' learning and development.
- Collaborate with parents and teachers to offer holistic support for the student
- Practice active listening and empathy during lessons to ensure that students' concerns feel heard
- Balance high expectations of your students with understanding, emphasising the importance of learning and not just results
- Manage daily enquiries from parents/students, including scheduling sessions and responding to questions
Family Guidance and Support
- Provide guidance to families that do not understand the Australian education system and curriculum structure
- Provide detailed and frequent feedback, ideally for 10-15 minutes at the end of every lesson to parents to avoid misunderstandings and ensure collaboration
- Provide potential subject selection/HSC recommendations to families with children in Years 9-12
- Alleviate parent concerns about students' progress, learning and performance through reassurance and addressing their anxieties through planning
- Apply and acknowledge any constructive feedback to lessons and teaching strategies
Availability and Commitment
- Be available for tutoring sessions during agreed-upon hours, particularly after-school hours and weekends.
- Need to be responsive and follow-up with EST when given instructions in a reasonable, and timely manner.
- Commit to tutoring lasting roughly a term (10-20 weeks).

You also want to create a warm and supportive environment where students feel safe to express ideas, ask questions, and make mistakes without judgment. You’re ready for this challenge, keen to experiment with what works and patient with students.
You love getting to know people - you're genuinely interested in your students as individuals. You enjoy learning about their backgrounds, interests, and aspirations. This curiosity helps you build rapport, tailor your teaching approach, and create a more engaging and personalized learning experience. You understand that strong tutor-student relationships are fundamental to effective education and you're committed to fostering a supportive environment where every student feels valued and understood.
You want to inspire and be a positive role model - at the heart of EST is the understanding that you are more than a tutor to students, you are a mentor. Your students look up to you and you want to set a positive example in your lessons. You also need to provide clear and supportive guidance to help students develop their own independence.
Ability to work on your own - you have next level organisational skills and have no issue getting the work done independently while maintaining high standards. You are responsible and are able to take initiative. You are able to manage and regulate your emotions to prevent issues from occurring in the lessons.
Strong interpersonal skills - you feel comfortable having honest (and sometimes hard) conversations with heart, ensuring open and empathetic communication with EST, parents or students. You are responsive to feedback and open to improving your own lessons or teaching practices.
Non-negotiables:
- Must have completed HSC Maths Advanced and Ext 1 in NSW with a ATAR of 95+ and/or have a strong passion for teaching/are studying in a degree in teaching or education
- Maths: Band 6 in Maths Advanced (Minimum) and an E3/E4 in Maths Extension 1
- Need to be able to travel to students home via car or public transport
- The ability to get things done efficiently and without supervision as an independent tutor
- Passion for connecting with people and building meaningful relationships
- Empathetic & compassionate

- Full fluency in English with impeccable written and verbal communication skills
- The hunger and drive to learn more on how to be a better teacher. You understand that all students are different, and that your proactiveness is what keeps performing at your best
- Software technical knowledge of Zoom, Google Meets, Google Docs, Google Slides, Microsoft Word & Powerpoint, and Canva.

- Any experience as an teacher or tutor
- Any experience working as an education specialist in curriculum, inclusive education or gifted education
