Established in 2000, Cigarworld Australia is a leading provider of high-quality products, including cigars, and specialized accessories. We are seeking a capable and proactive Software Engineer responsible for designing, building, and maintaining high-performance software solutions that support the company’s digital infrastructure. This role involves working closely with internal teams to analyse business needs, streamline operational processes, and implementing custom software applications that align with company goals. The engineer ensures all systems are scalable, secure, and optimized for performance, while also maintaining compliance with industry standards. In addition to managing software development lifecycles, the Software Engineer also plays a key role in automating deployments, troubleshooting issues, improving backend systems, and integrating third-party technologies to support the company’s e-commerce and retail operations.
Key Responsibilities
· Analyse specific business demands and translate them into robust software architectures using relevant web technologies.
· Quality Assurance & Testing: Write and execute comprehensive test plans for existing systems and new feature deployments to ensure device compatibility, performance, and cross-platform reliability.
· Feature Development & Fixes: Proactively diagnose backend infrastructure anomalies and implement strategic patches or new features to maximize system uptime.
· Technical Documentation: Maintain accurate, clear, and structured technical specifications, operational procedures, and version control guidelines in compliance with corporate quality standards.
· Ensure software features align with technical goals and deliver strategic recommendations for infrastructure upgrades.
· Explore upcoming web technologies, test minimal viable concepts, and analyze product data to continually improve total site performance and user experience.
Position Requirements Mandatory Criteria
· Experience: 5+ years of verified software development experience managing web-based applications specifically within luxury/fine goods e-commerce or highly regulated retail platforms (tobacco industry background highly ideal).
· Core Tech Stack: Demonstrated professional coding experience using PHP and React.
· Frontend Web Technologies: Highly proficient with JavaScript libraries, React ecosystems, HTML5, and responsive CSS.
· Database Management: Strong working knowledge of SQL database design, optimization, and querying.
· Application Security: Fundamental understanding of secure coding methodologies, data protection protocols, and modern web application security frameworks.
· Foundational awareness of highly regulated e-commerce environments, GovTech compliance frameworks, digital advertising restrictions, and the Public Health (Tobacco and Other Products) Act 2023.
· Excellent communication skills, an autonomous "can-do" mindset.
Desired Criteria
· Demonstrated background or subject matter expertise navigating the Australian tobacco legislative landscape.
· Solid, demonstrable experience building and consuming secure RESTful APIs.
· Prior development exposure within Azure Cloud environments and experience incorporating Kendo UI components.
Qualifications & Eligibility
· Education: Bachelor of Computer Science, Software Engineering, or an equivalent technical tertiary degree.
· Work Rights: Full, unrestricted Australian work rights are mandatory.
