Primary objective
Undertake and ensure the provision of a quality secretarial, administrative and paralegal support service to the
Solicitor-General and Chamber’s legal Staff.
Context statement
The Solicitor-General’s Chambers is responsible for the provision of high-level legal representation and advice to the
Attorney-General, executive government and the Cabinet office.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Undertake the general administration and management of the Solicitor-General's Chambers.
2. Provide secretarial and paralegal support to the Solicitor-General and other counsel in Chambers.
3. Provide guidance to the Solicitor-General and counsel in relation to government systems and procedures.
4. Administer the Solicitor-General's and counsels' diaries, organise various functions, liaise with all parties involved and
organise travel and accommodation.
5. Deal with telephone inquiries, liaise with solicitors, counsel, Ministerial and Departmental officers.
6. Prepare routine correspondence, ministerial and other documents from minimal instructions, and complete any follow
up action required.
7. Undertake legal research and maintain the Chamber's library resources.
8. Other duties as directed by the Solicitor-General and counsel.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven ability to provide high level administration support and paralegal support.
2. Sound interpersonal skills together with a high level of written and oral communication skills to be able to communicate
effectively with the public, peers and other agency officers.
3. High levels of initiative, organisational ability, discretion and confidentiality, including the ability to work under pressure.
4. Experience in drafting general correspondence, proof-reading documents, and knowledge of legal document preparation.
5. Experience in high level document searches and searching in legal databases (LexisNexis or similar).
6. Professional presentation and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with people from diverse
cultures and at varying levels.
7. Proven ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team, and under minimal direction and supervision.
Desirable
1. Experience in a legal environment and/or undertaking law or paralegal studies.
2. Experience in electronic document and file management using record management packages
3. Sound knowledge of government procedures relating to entitlements and reporting obligations for statutory office
holders.
