About the opportunity
Mercury Business Sales is one of Melbourne's leading business broking firms, connecting motivated vendors with qualified buyers across a range of industries. As we grow our pipeline, we're creating a dedicated Business Development Executive role to sit at the front of our sales process — a position that's equal parts detective, connector, and relationship builder.
This is a part-time role suited to someone who thrives on conversations, is energised by the hunt for opportunity, and wants to play a meaningful part in a high-performing, boutique sales environment without taking on the full weight of deal management.
What you'll actually be doing
You won't be closing deals. You'll be making them possible.
Your focus is the front end of the pipeline — identifying business owners who may be at a natural point of transition, initiating thoughtful outreach, and qualifying them well enough to book a productive meeting with our principal broker. When you hand over a meeting, it should already feel warm.
Day to day, you'll be:
- Researching target businesses across key industries and geographic areas to identify owners who may be open to a conversation about their exit options.
- Conducting outreach via phone, email, and LinkedIn — with a tone that's consultative and credible, never transactional.
- Qualifying prospects against clear criteria: motivation, business viability, timeline, and openness to a valuation.
- Booking and briefing the principal broker on each qualified meeting, providing a concise summary of what you've learned about the vendor and their business.
- Maintaining accurate records of all outreach activity, lead status, and pipeline progression in the CRM.
- Contributing to the refinement of scripts, messaging, and targeting criteria as you learn what works.
What this role is not
This is not a closing role. You won't be conducting valuations, negotiating terms, or managing transactions — that's the selling brokers domain. Your success is measured by the quality and volume of qualified meetings you generate, not by deal outcomes.
Who we're looking for
You don't need a background in business broking — but you do need a genuine aptitude for outbound sales and a professional communication style that builds trust quickly.
You'll be a strong fit if you have:
- Experience in a Sales Development, Business Development, or outbound sales role — even if part-time, freelance, or in a different industry.
- Confidence making cold and warm calls without needing a script to lean on.
- The curiosity to research a business and quickly understand its context before reaching out.
- A methodical approach to tracking activity and following up consistently.
- Comfort working independently and managing your own time within agreed targets.
- Any exposure to B2B sales, professional services, real estate, or financial services is advantageous but not essential.
What success looks like
In this role, performance is clear and measurable. Within your first 60 days, success means:
- A consistent weekly cadence of qualified outreach across phone and digital channels.
- A reliable volume of qualified meetings being booked for the broking team each week.
- A CRM that's accurate, up to date, and tells the story of your pipeline at a glance.
- Feedback from the broking team that meeting quality — not just quantity — is high.
The structure
- Part-time (3 days initially) — we care about output so which days are flexible.
- Competitive hourly rate plus performance incentives tied to qualified meetings booked and deals that proceed to listing.
- Based in Burwood, with the option for hybrid working after the training period.
- Direct reporting line to the principal broker, with close collaboration on targeting and messaging strategy.
Why it's worth your time
This role offers genuine autonomy, clear metrics, and the satisfaction of knowing that the deals getting done started with a conversation you initiated. For someone who wants to build real commercial skills in a high-trust, relationship-driven environment —this is a rare and well-defined opportunity. Remuneration structure provides for and rewards success.
