Position Summary
As a Residential Care Officer, you will be responsible for providing hands-on care and ongoing support to individuals living with disabilities. This role supports participants within residential and community settings, helping them maintain independence, wellbeing, and social connection. You will work closely with families, healthcare professionals, and community services to ensure high-quality and individualised support.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide emotional reassurance and physical assistance to clients during challenging or distressing situations
- Assist clients with daily personal care activities, including dressing, bathing, grooming, toileting, and eating
- Monitor clients’ physical and mental health and accurately document any changes or concerns
- Accompany clients to medical appointments, community outings, and recreational activities
- Support clients in developing everyday living skills such as budgeting, shopping, and household management
- Collaborate with families, carers, and healthcare professionals to design and implement individualised care plans
- Encourage participation in personal interests, hobbies, and skill-building activities
- Assess clients’ physical, emotional, and behavioural needs to determine appropriate levels of support
- Assist clients in building healthy relationships and positive social networks
- Review medical records and support documentation and facilitate referrals to appropriate residential or specialist services
- Support individuals experiencing addiction or complex needs through structured assistance and referral pathways
- Encourage and maintain positive behaviour in line with agreed behaviour support strategies
- Assist clients in accessing and applying for relevant government welfare benefits and programs
- Work with community organisations, welfare agencies, and public and private services to promote access to community resources
- Develop and deliver training, educational, and support programs aligned with individual support plans
Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following qualification pathways:
1. Relevant Diploma or Higher (Specialised)
A Diploma-level qualification or higher with a specialisation in one or more of the following:
- Disability Services
- Residential Care
- Health and Wellbeing
- Youth Work
2. Community Work Australia Accredited Qualification
A Diploma or higher qualification accredited by Community Work Australia, with a focus on
- Residential Care Services
- Disability Services
- Health and Wellbeing
- Youth Work
3. Relevant Non-Specialised Qualification
A qualification related to community services that is equivalent to AQF Level 5 or higher, and which sufficiently prepares graduates to work in community and human services roles in Australia.
Relevant studies commonly include:
- Sociology and the structure and function of social, political, and economic systems
- Social policy, human development, and wellbeing across psychological, physical, and social domains
- Community welfare services and support systems
- Working with individuals, families, groups, and communities
- Communication skills, basic counselling techniques, and interpersonal practice
