Editor, Melbourne (12-month parental leave contract)
Melbourne | Hybrid | Full time, 12-month fixed term | Reporting to the Head of Content & Editor in Chief
Time Out is looking for a Melbourne based editor to lead its content for 12 months while our Managing Editor is on parental leave.
This is a hands-on editorial role for someone who knows Melbourne well and can tell people what is worth their time. You will shape how our audience discovers the city's food, drink, arts, culture and events across the website, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and email.
The role
You will run the editorial output for Time Out Melbourne, which covers writing, commissioning, editing, creating social tiles, filming, scheduling and reporting, making sure to run a mix of content to meet Time Out Melbourne’s KPIs.
You will also represent the brand publicly. That means appearing in videos, attending events and venues, and building relationships with the operators, festivals and agencies who bring us stories first. Melbourne's major annual projects sit with this role, including the Food & Drink Awards, Travel Awards and Time Out Recommends.
The wider Australian editorial team are based in Sydney, so you will need to take direction from the Editor in Chief remotely while also being trusted to make certain editorial calls for your city in line with the brand and business objectives.
What we are looking for
- Three or more years as an editor, writer or journalist or content creator, with a focus on food, the arts, culture, travel or lifestyle
- Strong, fast writing and a sharp eye for editing other people's copy
- A keen interest and experience in creating content for social media and knowledge of social trends and algorithms
- Confidence on camera and genuine fluency in social video
- The ability to work independently while remaining open to direction, and to manage several projects at once
- Deep knowledge of Melbourne and a real interest in what is happening across the city
- A degree in journalism, communications or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
Terms and benefits
- 12-month fixed term contract covering parental leave, full time
- Flexible hybrid and Melbourne based.
- No set start or finish times, which matters in a role that involves regular evening events
- Confidential counselling and wellbeing support for you and your household through our Employee Assistance Program
