The Assistant Principal reports directly to the Principal.

Assistant Principals have a primary responsibility for the management of significant areas or functions within the school to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program. In exercising this responsibility, Assistant Principals will have the authority to make all significant decisions relating to the program, budget and staff relating to their area of designated responsibility within the framework of the school's charter, policies and budget. Assistant Principals will contribute to the overall management of the school through involvement in corporate policy formulation and decision making.

The management of a significant school program or functional areas in schools, involve Assistant Principals in the analysis of the needs of students and the translation of state educational policy and frameworks into appropriate education programs to meet the needs of all students.

Assistant Principals at Mount Rowan Secondary College will lead by example by modelling the school's vision, values and high expectations; demonstrating exemplary ethical practice; implementing the College's Instructional Model and techniques; and maintain outstanding classroom practice.

Building staff capability and driving school improvement through coaching, mentoring and constructive feedback; facilitating evidence-informed professional learning and PLCs or Teaching Sprints is the responsibility of all Assistant Principals.
In liaison with the Principal, the Assistant Principal - School Climate and Engagement has overall responsibility for:
Calm, Safe and Orderly Environment
Lead the development of a calm, safe, and respectful school environment where both teachers and students can thrive, underpinned by consistent expectations, clear systems, and restorative practices
Attendance
Lead a whole-school approach to student attendance that promotes high expectations, early intervention and strong engagement in learning, underpinned by consistent processes, collaborative case management and proactive partnerships with students, families and staff
Data and Engagement
Lead the analysis and use of student engagement, attendance, wellbeing and behaviour data to monitor outcomes, evaluate the effectiveness of school climate and engagement strategies, and drive continuous improvement in student engagement and wellbeing.
Respectful Relationships
Oversee the implementation of the Respectful Relationships initiative across the school by supporting curriculum delivery, staff professional learning and whole-school practices that promote respectful relationships, inclusion, student voice and a positive school culture
Behaviour Curriculum/Classroom mastery
Oversee the implementation and ongoing review of the Behaviour Curriculum and Classroom Mastery/PCMS routines to ensure consistent expectations, positive classroom environments and effective behaviour support practices that maximise student engagement, safety and readiness to learn across the school
Student Voice
Ensure that student voice and leadership opportunities are developed and embedded across the school through meaningful consultation, authentic participation and collaboration between students, staff and the wider school community
Appropriately qualified individuals currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.

The Assistant Principal- School Climate and Engagement, is responsible for ensuring that the school maintains a calm, safe and orderly learning environment where all students are supported to engage positively in school life and experience a strong sense of belonging. The role leads whole-school approaches to behaviour, attendance, student engagement and school culture, ensuring that systems and practices are proactive, consistent and restorative in nature.
Through clear expectations, relational practice and data-informed intervention, the Assistant Principal- School Climate and Engagement supports staff to create classrooms and learning environments where both teachers and students can thrive. This position also plays a key role in strengthening student voice and leadership opportunities, embedding the Behaviour Curriculum and Classroom Mastery routines, and fostering a culture of high expectations, accountability and collective responsibility for student engagement and behaviour across the school.

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class:

The person must have provisional or full registration approved by the Victorian Institute of Teaching; and

if the person completed an Australian postgraduate level initial teaching program or course of study on or after 1 January 2024, they must demonstrate that they have satisfactorily completed a postgraduate level accredited initial teacher education program that has been accredited by an Australian State or Territory Teacher Regulatory Authority as satisfying the requirements of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership 'Accreditation of initial teacher education programs in Australia: Standards and Procedures'; and

a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education (ITE) program after 1 July 2016 must also demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements (this condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian ITE program completed by the person).
