The Anaesthetics and Intensive Care SRMO positions at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) and North Shore Private Hospital (NSPH) provides junior doctors with an exceptional opportunity to gain experience in the assessment and management of critically ill patients, perioperative medicine and anaesthetic care within both public and private healthcare settings.
Working closely with Anaesthetists, Intensive Care Specialists and multidisciplinary teams, SRMOs are actively involved in the care of patients undergoing a wide range of surgical procedures and those requiring advanced critical care support. The role offers exposure to airway management, perioperative patient assessment, procedural skills, postoperative care, resuscitation and the management of complex medical and surgical patients.
At Royal North Shore Hospital, trainees gain experience within a major tertiary referral and trauma centre caring for highly complex patients across specialties including trauma, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery and emergency medicine. At North Shore Private Hospital, trainees benefit from exposure to a high-volume elective surgical service and a broad range of specialist procedures, providing valuable insight into both public and private healthcare systems.
This position offers a strong foundation for doctors considering future careers in Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine, Emergency Medicine or other acute care specialties. Trainees benefit from close consultant supervision, structured teaching, multidisciplinary collaboration and opportunities to develop procedural and clinical decision-making skills in high-acuity environments.
Join a dedicated team committed to clinical excellence, education and patient-centred care while building the knowledge, skills and confidence required for a successful career in critical care and perioperative medicine.

What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO) in Anaesthesia & Intensive Care is to provide Residents an opportunity to work and experience the dynamic world of these two critical care specialties. It is a valuable opportunity to build an understanding and appreciation of the challenges and complexity of care, as well as the rewards of working in these two areas of medicine and would suit those interested in exploring a career in either specialty. Residents will rotate equally through both subspecialties over the course of 12 months. During their anaesthetic rotation Residents will provide anaesthesia services to patients in the operating theatre complex, working one on one with Consultants and Provisional Fellows across a range of sub-specialties. Importantly, the rotation gives Residents experience in peri-operative care, fostering the development of pre-operative assessment and planning skills, acute pain management, and post-operative clinical care as directed and overseen by supervising Consultants.
During the ICU rotation Residents will gain experience and provide clinical care, under appropriate supervision, to patients requiring Intensive Care in a complex clinical environment. Residents will have responsibilities and opportunities for autonomous practice commensurate with their level of experience.
