Shape the future of data at an enterprise scale at Avant
We are looking for an experienced Data Architect to lead and define our enterprise data architecture, playing a pivotal role in delivering a next-generation platform. This is a highly visible, strategic role where you’ll influence how data is structured, governed, and leveraged across the organisation. You will partner with senior leaders, engineers and product teams to design scalable, secure, and high-performing data solutions that unlock meaningful business outcomes.
Reporting to the Head of Data, Analytics and AI, you will be the organisation’s authoritative expert across the full data lifecycle from discovery through to design, build and go-live. You will define the enterprise data strategy, own the enterprise data model, and ensure the seamless flow, integrity, and governance of data.
This is an opportunity to lead from the front, translating complex business challenges into modern, cloud-based data solutions while shaping best practice across architecture, modelling, and governance.
Key Accountabilities
Data Architecture Design & Strategy
- Lead the development of enterprise-wide data architecture, including models, integration patterns, and platform services
- Assess current-state architecture, identifying gaps, risks, and opportunities for uplift
- Define target-state architecture and transition roadmaps aligned to strategic goals
- Partner with senior stakeholders to shape and communicate data strategy
- Ensure solutions are scalable, secure, high-performing, and future-ready
Design, Modelling & Integration
- Develop conceptual, logical, and physical data models across platforms (data lakes, warehouses)
- Design and implement robust data ingestion, transformation (ETL/ELT), and integration solutions
- Apply best practice modelling techniques using tools such as DBSchema and ERWIN
- Champion modern data platform design and optimised schema practices
Data Governance & Quality
- Embed strong data governance, quality, lineage, and metadata management practices
- Define and enforce enterprise data standards across programs and platforms
- Ensure compliance with APRA standards, Privacy Act, and regulatory requirements
- Support development of enterprise data catalogues and business glossaries
- Drive a culture of data security, integrity, and accountability
Stakeholder Engagement & Thought Leadership
- Collaborate with program leaders, engineers, and product teams to deliver impactful data solutions
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear, business-friendly insights
- Mentor teams and uplift data architecture capability across the organisation
- Stay ahead of emerging trends including Data Mesh, Data Fabric, and AI/ML
- Maintain a strong focus on delivering measurable business value
Skills and experience required:
- Experience in data architecture a complex and regulated environment
- Previous Financial Services industry expeirence
- Deep expertise in modern cloud platforms (Azure preferred), including Databricks, data lakes and warehouses
- Strong experience across data modelling (Relational, Dimensional, Medallion) and advanced SQL optimisation
- Proven track record designing scalable ETL/ELT and integration pipelines
- Solid understanding of data governance, security, and regulatory frameworks (including APRA)
- Exceptional stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to simplify complexity
- Exposure to Data Mesh or Data Fabric architectures (nice to have but not essential)
