Position Overview
The Retail Manager will be responsible for planning, organising and controlling the daily operations of Lombardos. The role includes managing product mix, stock levels, purchasing, pricing, marketing, customer service, financial records, budgeting and staff supervision while ensuring compliance with workplace health and safety requirements.
The Retail Manager will provide hands-on leadership and ensure the store operates efficiently, maintains appropriate service standards and meets its operational and commercial objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Store Operations & Stock Management
- Plan, organise and manage the day-to-day operations of the retail establishment.
- Determine appropriate product mix, stock levels and customer service standards.
- Monitor customer demand, sales trends and stock movement to maintain suitable product availability.
- Coordinate purchasing and stock replenishment according to operational requirements.
- Liaise with suppliers regarding product availability, pricing, quality and deliveries.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and conduct regular stocktakes.
- Monitor stock rotation, damaged products, wastage and inventory discrepancies.
- Ensure products are appropriately stored, displayed, priced and presented.
- Monitor store performance and implement operational improvements where required.
Purchasing, Pricing & Marketing
- Formulate and implement purchasing policies and procedures for the establishment.
- Review supplier prices, product costs and sales performance to support purchasing decisions.
- Establish and review product prices considering supplier costs, customer demand, competition and business objectives.
- Develop and implement marketing and promotional initiatives to support sales.
- Promote and advertise the establishment's goods and services through appropriate channels.
- Plan product displays and merchandising arrangements to improve product visibility and customer convenience.
- Monitor customer purchasing patterns and identify opportunities for new or improved product offerings.
Sales & Customer Service
- Maintain high standards of professional and efficient customer service.
- Sell goods and services to customers and provide information and advice regarding products and their use where required.
- Respond to customer enquiries, feedback and complaints promptly and professionally.
- Ensure employees consistently maintain established customer service standards.
- Monitor customer feedback and identify opportunities to improve service delivery.
- Build positive relationships with customers and encourage repeat business through reliable service and product availability.
Financial Management & Budgeting
- Maintain accurate records of stock levels, sales, purchases, expenses and financial transactions.
- Undertake budgeting for the establishment and monitor expenditure against operational requirements.
- Monitor sales revenue, labour costs, inventory expenditure and other operating expenses.
- Review financial and operational information to assess store performance.
- Ensure cash handling and point-of-sale procedures are accurately followed.
- Investigate stock or transaction discrepancies and take appropriate corrective action.
- Prepare sales, stock and operational reports for management as required.
- Identify opportunities to control expenditure and improve profitability.
Staff Management & Supervision
- Control the selection, induction, training, rostering and supervision of retail employees.
- Determine staffing requirements according to customer demand and trading requirements.
- Allocate duties and responsibilities and monitor completion of assigned tasks.
- Train employees in customer service, sales procedures, stock handling, merchandising and point-of-sale operations.
- Monitor employee performance and provide guidance, coaching and feedback where required.
- Maintain appropriate staffing levels during trading periods.
- Promote a professional, productive and customer-focused workplace environment.
Workplace Health & Safety
- Ensure compliance with applicable occupational health and safety regulations.
- Maintain a safe, clean and organised environment for employees, customers and visitors.
- Identify workplace hazards and implement appropriate preventative and corrective measures.
- Ensure employees understand and follow safe work procedures.
- Maintain appropriate workplace safety and compliance records.
- Ensure relevant company policies and operational procedures are consistently followed.
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in retail management or a similar customer-focused retail environment.
- Demonstrated experience managing day-to-day retail operations.
- Strong understanding of product selection, inventory control, purchasing, pricing, merchandising and customer service.
- Experience maintaining stock and financial transaction records and undertaking budgeting.
- Experience selecting, training, rostering and supervising retail employees.
- Strong commercial awareness and ability to monitor sales, costs and store performance.
- Excellent leadership, communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities within a busy retail environment.
- Strong customer service skills and ability to resolve customer concerns professionally.
- Understanding of applicable workplace health and safety requirements.
Qualifications
- AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma in Retail Management, Business, Management or a related field; or
- At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualification. In some instances, relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.
Work Environment
The Retail Manager position at M Lombardo & Sons Pty Ltd t/a Lombardos is a hands-on management role requiring active involvement in daily retail operations and regular interaction with employees, customers and suppliers.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining appropriate product mix and stock levels, managing purchasing and pricing, supporting sales and promotional activities, maintaining financial records, undertaking budgeting, supervising employees and ensuring compliance with workplace health and safety requirements.
