Your Opportunity
As a Maritime Simulator Senior Systems Engineer, you will:
Provide expertise in the operation and system support of the Kongsberg Marine Simulator Maintain and improve the simulation facility and its associated systems.
Provide high-level technical expertise for server infrastructure. Contribute to enterprise infrastructure projects.
This position reports to the Operations Manager, Maritime.
This is a Permanent, Full-Time opportunity
The position will be based primarily at the Great Barrier Reef International Marine College, Cairns, however you may be required to perform work at other TAFE Queensland campuses.
Key Responsibilities
Manage, maintain, and continuously improve Kongsberg Simulator systems, in line with operational requirements.
Interpret, configure and troubleshoot NMEA protocols across navigation and simulation systems.
Develop and modify 3D models and simulation areas using NEAT tool.
Model and develop vessel and objected dynamics using hydrodynamic modelling tools.
Provide operational support for Maritime Simulator infrastructure, including servers, Windows domain services, storage, backups, and system security to ensure reliability and performance.
Manage network and architecture design, maintenance, load balancing and infrastructure management across operational environments.
Configure and troubleshoot serial communications (RS-232, RS-422, RS-485) for device integration and data communication.
Configure, operate, and support simulation exercises, including scenario setup (navigation, engineering, and emergency response), to meet training and assessment requirements.
Establish and maintain the Great Barrier Reef International Marine College (GBRIMC) as a centre of excellence in maritime simulation training.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of statutory requirements under the STCW Convention and other relevant legislation, along with current industry trends and emerging technologies.
Work collaboratively with educators to align simulation delivery with training package requirements, supporting both learning outcomes and assessment activities.
Undertake research and development activities to enhance simulation capability, training delivery, and business operations.
Ensure alignment of all activities with TAFE Queensland strategic and operational plans, with a strong focus on supporting day-to-day training delivery.
Improve the reliability, functionality, and security of maritime simulators through proactive maintenance, system upgrades, and continuous monitoring.
Develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and operational guidelines relating to simulation activities, including the effective use of Kongsberg systems to support teaching staff.
Drive continuous improvement, automation, and lean practices across simulation operations to enhance efficiency and user experience.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Maritime management team, providing technical advice and practical solutions to support training delivery.
Maintain an understanding of TAFE Queensland's commercial environment, including financial performance, resource utilisation, and external factors impacting operations.
Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including educators, students, and external partners.
Actively engage with industry, business, and the broader community to ensure training remains relevant, contemporary, and aligned with industry needs.

How you will be assessed
The ideal applicant will be someone who has the following key capabilities:
Demonstrates sound knowledge and operation of the Kongsberg Ship Simulator and associated software, and works collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary, objective driven team.
Ability to develop and update simulated training scenarios for simulation deliveries in accordance with course objectives and client requirements.
Experience maintaining Maritime Simulators aligned with standards.
Commits to achieving quality outcomes, keeps up to date with emerging technologies and implements relevant applications in appropriate settings, with the ability to network in appropriate forums.
Highly developed written and verbal communication skills and ability to liaise, consult and negotiate with a broad range of internal and external clients, with the added ability to relate complex technical issues.
Displays flexibility and responsiveness and has the initiative, attitude and ability to thrive within a dynamic, challenging and changing environment.
Demonstrated commitment to a positive Maritime team culture.
Highly Desirable Requirements
Tertiary qualification in ICT or equivalent experience
Enterprise infrastructure or simulation experience
Industry certifications (e.g. MSCE, Azure, ITIL)
Experience with simulation systems, Exchange/O365, Azure, Windows Server, Hyper V/VMware, Veeam, storage systems
NMEA protocol configuration and troubleshooting
3D model and simulation area development (NEAT tool)
Hydrodynamic modelling
Network architecture design and load balancing
Serial communications configuration (RS 232/422/485)
Programming in C++, Python, XML, JavaScript and HTML
Cybersecurity capability
