Primary objective
Provide legal and administrative support in relation to responding to requests for information including Freedom of Information
(FOI), court and legal requests, in consultation with Department of Corporate and Digital Development (DCDD), program areas,
and the Manager.
Context statement
The Legal, Freedom of Information and Complaints Unit sits within the Office of the Commissioner and ensures the Department
of Corrections is effectively and efficiently fulfilling its obligations under relevant legislation, while improving Chief Executive
oversight and access to legal support, in consultation with the Solicitor for the Northern Territory and other legal service providers.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assist the processing of Freedom of Information applications in conjunction with DCDD and other forms of information release
in compliance with the Information Act 2002, the Correctional Services Act 2014, the Youth Justice Act 2005, and any other
relevant legislation.
2. Assist in the processing and provision of material requested under court summons and subpoena, warrant and other types of
information sharing requests, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and court rules.
3. Assist in the preparation of correspondence including Ministerial briefings, reports and other documents as necessary.
4. Liaise with Solicitor for the Northern Territory and other external legal service providers as appropriate.
5. Assist the Legal and FOI team with its responsibilities with Inquests, legislative delegations and other legal matters.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Ability to interpret and apply legislation and understand legal principles.
2. Knowledge of the issues, principles and practices in the areas of court processes, release of information and information
privacy.
3. Demonstrated effectiveness in a highly sensitive, confidential, and complex environment with a high level of integrity,
discretion and confidentiality.
4. Well-developed organisational and time-management skills with a proven ability to work in an environment of continuous
change with attributes of flexibility and adaptability.
5. Well-developed oral and written communication skills and ability to interact professionally with a range of internal and external
stakeholders.
6. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team to achieve timely outcomes while maintaining high standards of
accuracy and attention to detail.
Desirable
1. Demonstrated experience undertaking release of information in a complex legislative environment.
2. Well-developed practical understanding of records management and computerised information systems.
