About the role
The Economy & Place Officer supports the delivery of economic development, placemaking and activation initiatives that contribute to a vibrant, inclusive and sustainable local economy across the Byron Shire.
Working within Council’s Economy and Place Planning team, this role assists in implementing adopted strategies, place plans and activation programs that strengthen local centres, support local business and enhance community and visitor experiences. The position works collaboratively with internal teams, local businesses, community groups and external stakeholders to help deliver place‑based outcomes on the ground.
This role is well suited to someone who enjoys working on diverse projects, supporting community‑focused initiatives and contributing to positive economic and place outcomes.
Note: This is a full-time, term position (35 hours per week), until 22 January 2027.
Key responsibilities:
- Assist in the delivery of economic development initiatives, place plans and activation programs
- Support implementation of adopted strategies and action plans, including economic development and visitor economy initiatives
- Coordinate components of projects, including logistics, stakeholder input, monitoring progress and reporting
- Support stakeholder and community engagement activities, consultation processes and events
- Assist with place activation initiatives that enhance public spaces and local centres
- Contribute to research, data collection and analysis relating to economic trends, visitation and local business conditions
- Prepare reports, briefings and presentations for internal and external stakeholders
- Support grant applications, funding acquittals and basic project budget monitoring
- Work collaboratively with other Council teams to support integrated economy and place outcomes
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in economic development, planning, business, tourism or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated experience
- Experience supporting projects or programs, ideally within economic development, placemaking or community initiatives
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
- Basic analytical and problem‑solving skills, with experience collecting and interpreting information
- A collaborative approach and the ability to contribute positively to a team environment

We offer:
- A full-time, term position (35 hours per week), until 22 January 2027
- Salary and Conditions will be in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award with appointment in the range of $1,615.14 to $1,871.39 per week (dependent upon skills and experience)
- 12% Superannuation

Location: This position is based at Mullumbimby; however, Council can require you to work from other work sites as required for operational reasons.
