Apply now for an Unaccredited Training position in Orthopaedic Surgery, within the Northern Rivers - Richmond Network (Lismore Base Hospital, Ballina District Hospital and Casino & District Memorial Hospital). This is a full-time position, commencing 1 February 2027 for the 2027 Clinical Year.
The successful applicants will have a commitment to Orthopaedics and be looking to further their career in a busy regional hospital under the supervision and guidance of expert senior consultants and orthopaedic surgeons.
Our Junior Medical Officers are well supported throughout their training at the Lismore Base Hospital, JMOs have the opportunity to participate in weekly Orthopaedic Case Reviews, monthly Grand Rounds Whole of Hospital and various educations sessions hosted by both the Lismore Base Hospital and University Centre for Rural Health (UCRH). The Unaccredited Trainee year is an ideal training year for Registrars applying for formal surgical training positions.
Where you'll be working
Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) is the recognised Trauma Centre for the North Coast Region and is linked with the local helicopter retrieval service.
The hospital is an acute regional referral hospital of 280 beds on the Far North Coast of NSW, serving a population of approximately 170,000 people on the Far North Coast of NSW and has a busy Emergency Department (40,000 presentations annually), ICU and Coronary Care Unit, as well as Surgery (general, orthopaedic and speciality surgery), Paediatrics, Mental Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The Lismore Base Hospital theatres ward comprises of eight operating theatres, two endoscopy theatres and three recovery areas and both Ballina District Hospital and Casino & District Memorial Hospital have one theatre each.
LBH is an affiliated teaching hospital for medical students from the University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, University of Western Sydney and Bond University. The hospital has a strong commitment to teaching and support for its Junior Medical Officers.

What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the Unaccredited Trainee in Orthopaedics is to provide safe and high quality care, assess and manage, under supervision, orthopaedic surgery patients. The trainee needs to be aware of their limitations and work in a collegiate and collaborate manner.
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
The position supports meeting the requirements for training with the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.
