Your role:
Your main responsibility will be to prepare and serve high quality meals for Army personnel and at special functions, with taste, nutrition and hygiene being your highest priorities. You’ll also be expected to accommodate a variety of dietary and cultural requirements. More specific duties will include menu planning, provisions ordering and stock control, rostering and training staff.
Not only will this job give you a head start in the hospitality sector, as an Army soldier you’ll also gain general military skills not normally associated in such a role including first aid, field craft, weapon handling and combat skills – much more than a standard role in hospitality!
Your Military duties include, but aren’t limited to:
- Prepare and cook complete meals consisting of soups, entrees, main courses and sweets
- The preparation of all types of meals being predominantly bulk cookery is conducted in either a commercial kitchen or field environment. On occasions, cooking for functions also occurs
- Chefs may advance through the ranks to positions of responsibility such as shift, kitchen and catering supervisors
- Main job functions at higher ranks include menu planning, ordering and stock control of food, rostering staff, conducting on the job training and workplace assessment; and providing technical catering advice

Location:
Following your initial military training, you could be posted to one of the many Army bases and units across Australia.
Salary:
Upon commencing training, your starting salary will be approximately $60,517 per annum plus 16.4% superannuation and your pay will increase as you progress through training.
On completion of your initial military training and initial employment training, you’ll enjoy a package starting from $82,322 per annum.
Eligibility:
For this role, you must:
- Be at least 17 at the time of enlistment, an Australian Citizen, and have completed an Australian Year 10 education (or equivalent) with passes in English and Mathematics

- Be reasonably fit and healthy. Keeping fit is a big part of joining the ADF. You’ll need to pass a physical fitness test before you join, but don’t worry, we'll give you tips to help you prepare
