About the Role
ALS Food & Pharmaceutical Division operates a state-of-the-art analytical laboratory in Rydalmere, Sydney, serving a diverse client base.
We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced Team Leader to join our Metals & Wet Chemistry team and drive technical excellence and operational efficiency.
This role is Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:15 PM (with some flexibility).
Day to Day
Providing technical and operational leadership to a team of laboratory technicians within the Metals & Wet Chemistry section
Managing daily sample workflow, including delegation of tasks to team members
Completing and overseeing routine and sophisticated laboratory testing within the Metals & Wet Chemistry team, including wet chemistry techniques such as titrations, Karl Fischer (KF), pH, UV-Vis, and TLC
Supervising and supporting ICP-MS and ICP-OES sample preparation and instrument operation
Ensuring all analytical procedures are conducted in accordance with compendial methods (e.g. BP, USP) and ALS Quality Work Instructions, including QA/QC requirements
Authorising results, signing reports, and managing out-of-specification (OOS) results — including root cause analysis, remedial actions, and client notification
Assigning batches, monitoring completion times, and optimising daily laboratory efficiency
Identifying opportunities for operational improvement and achieving performance targets agreed with the Laboratory Manager/Supervisor
Conducting training for team members and acting as a technical resource across the section
Ensuring full induction of new team members and participating in performance reviews
Preparing purchase orders and managing consumable stock levels
Ensuring compliance with ALS HSE policies, reporting and rectifying any unsafe practices or environmental concerns
Participating in audits and maintaining the ALS F&P Quality System within the team
Essential Skills, Experience & Knowledge
A Diploma or bachelor's degree in science (preferably Chemistry) or equivalent relevant experience
Minimum 3 years' laboratory experience , ideally within a pharmaceutical or analytical testing environment
Demonstrated experience with compendial methods (e.g. USP, BP) — highly essential
Strong hands-on experience with ICP-MS and/or ICP-OES
Proficiency in wet chemistry techniques including titrations, Karl Fischer (KF), pH, UV-Vis, and TLC
Proven leadership ability with experience supervising or mentoring laboratory staff
An understanding of GMP requirements and familiarity with pharmaceutical quality systems
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to liaise with clients as required
Strong attention to detail, sound decision-making, and effective problem-solving skills
High organisational skills and the ability to prioritise and manage workloads under pressure
Computer literacy; familiarity with LIMS is an advantage
