Mackay Regional Council is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Economic Development Officer to join our Economic Development & Tourism team. This is a permanent full-time position.
This is a banded position (Level 4–5) offering an exciting opportunity for professionals at different stages of their economic development career. The successful candidate will be appointed at a level commensurate with their skills, experience and qualifications.
In this role, you'll work closely with businesses, industry groups, government agencies and community stakeholders to support initiatives that drive economic growth, diversification and investment across the Mackay region.
About the Role
As an Economic Development Officer, you will contribute to the delivery of the Mackay Region Economic Development Strategy 2025–2030 while supporting projects and initiatives that strengthen the region's economy and business community. At the higher level, you will take a lead role in delivering strategic projects and initiatives and exercising greater independent judgement.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Delivering economic development projects and initiatives aligned with Council's Corporate Plan and Economic Development Strategy.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with businesses, industry associations, government agencies and community stakeholders.
- Supporting local businesses through advice, information, training opportunities and business support initiatives.
- Contributing to investment attraction and industry promotion activities.
- Undertaking economic research, analysis and reporting to support evidence-based decision-making.
- Preparing reports, briefings, presentations, tenders and project documentation.
- Collaborating across Council to support coordinated delivery of economic development programs and initiatives.
Essential Qualifications
- Qualifications in Economics, Business, Planning, Arts, Marketing or a related discipline.
- Current Queensland "C" Class Driver Licence (or interstate equivalent).
Essential Skills & Experience
- Experience building and maintaining productive stakeholder relationships.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience contributing to project delivery and working to deadlines.
- Well-developed analytical and research skills.
- Ability to prepare quality reports and correspondence.
- Strong customer service focus and stakeholder engagement capability.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience using tools such as Adobe Suite and economic modelling platforms including REMPLAN.
Highly Regarded
- Experience in economic development, investment attraction, industry development or small business support.
- Experience in community engagement and stakeholder liaison.
- Experience in local government or the public sector.
- Experiencepreparing and interpreting economic and statistical data.
Level 5 Applicants
Applicants seeking appointment at Level 5 should demonstrate stronger experience in delivering economic development initiatives, undertaking economic analysis, developing strategic partnerships, and exercising independent judgement in identifying opportunities and solutions that support regional growth and diversification.

- Base annual salary of $95,769 – $104,821 (This is a banded 4-5 position. The level offered will be determined by qualifications and experience).
