Forensicare
Forensicare (Victorian Institute of Forensic Mental Health) is Victoria’s specialist provider of forensic mental health services. We deliver recovery-focused programs that support consumers living with serious mental illness who are connected to the justice system, across a variety of settings including community based services, inpatient units, and secure environments throughout Victoria.
Position Objective
The Unit Manager is an integral part of the nursing team and has responsibility and accountability for providing high level management and direction for the overall development of the unit, including clinical leadership, planning, development of human, physical and financial resources. The Unit Manager works collaboratively with discipline leads and service partners to ensure integrated care and shared accountability for outcomes. This position engages with other managers and service providers across Forensicare to improve and maintain the unit and service’s management, clinical practice, educational and support activities. The position must provide direction and support that is aligned to the outcomes of the Forensicare Strategic Plan, the National Mental Health Standards, the Mental Health & Wellbeing Act and other relevant legislation, standards and competencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clinical and operational leadership to ensure the safe, effective, and efficient delivery of nursing services within the unit
- Lead workforce planning, recruitment, and development initiatives to build a capable, engaged, and resilient nursing team
- Collaborate with allied health and psychology discipline leads to support integrated care planning and multidisciplinary service delivery
- Oversee the implementation of evidence-based practices and ensure compliance with relevant standards, legislation, and ethical frameworks
- Manage unit resources, including budget planning, procurement, and infrastructure, to support sustainable service delivery
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement through clinical supervision, performance development, and quality assurance activities
- Support practice development, education, and research initiatives in partnership with the Nursing and Practice Development Unit and other service leads
- Provide day-to-day leadership and operational oversight to ensure safe effective and efficient delivery of services aligned with Forensicare’s values and priorities
Key Selection Criteria
- Current registration with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse, with extensive experience in mental health nursing, including leadership roles in inpatient settings
- Postgraduate qualification in psychiatric or mental health nursing, or completion of a specialist undergraduate psychiatric nursing program
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and contribute to advanced clinical practice, education, and service development in line with contemporary mental health care standards
- Demonstrated ability to clinical teams, with a strong focus on staff development, supervision, and performance management
- Proven experience in operational management, including budget oversight, resource allocation, and service planning
