Why You Should Apply
This is a private equity backed group that has grown quickly through acquisition, with the acquisition run pausing early next year to consolidate what has been bought. It has a startup feel with structure and capital behind it. The finance function is small enough that the person in this seat owns their remit outright, and the systems environment is mid build, with Sage Intacct in place and a major platform rollout underway.
What the business wants from this hire is not another pair of hands on the close. It wants someone to take the operational accounting function off the Financial Controller's desk, lift the accountant underneath them, and improve how the numbers are produced while producing them.
If you are at the point where doing the work well is no longer the challenge, and the next thing you want is people and process, this is worth your attention.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Financial Controller, with a Management Accountant reporting to you, you will run the operational accounting function and sit between finance and the operations teams. The role exists to produce three things: a clean and timely month end, management packs that budget owners can act on, and a better process at the end of each quarter than at the start of it.
The environment is still being built, so you will be shaping how things are done rather than inheriting a finished playbook. You will also be in complex business conversations from week one, not month six, and the person currently in the seat finishes in October, so the handover window is short. If you want a defined lane and settled processes, this is not the role.
What You'll Do
The role splits across month end and reporting, supervision of the Management Accountant, and process improvement, with the balance shifting through the month.
- Own the full month end process, from close through to reconciliations and reporting
- Review the Management Accountant's work and build their technical and commercial capability
- Prepare monthly management packs with commentary on variances, movements and margin
- Oversee bank reconciliations, customer and supplier ledgers, and intercompany transactions
- Partner with budget owners on budgets, forecasts and monthly P&L queries
- Maintain balance sheet reconciliations and resolve out of standard accounts
- Lead the year end audit process alongside the external audit team
- Improve processes as you go, including where AI and systems can take work off the team
Who You Are
The first filter on this role is presence. You are outgoing, energetic and comfortable holding your own in a room early, and the accountant reporting to you will learn from how you work. Sitting underneath that is a real technical foundation, because month end delivery is the daily job and the review sits with you.
- Outgoing and energetic, credible in a complex business conversation from week one
- Experience reviewing, mentoring or developing a junior accountant
- Proactive about process, you spot the inefficiency and go and fix it rather than flag it
- Strong management and financial accounting background with consistent month end delivery
- Comfortable holding competing priorities in a business that is still building
- Strong Excel
- CA or CPA qualified, or equivalent
- Practice trained background, advantageous
- Sage Intacct experience, advantageous
- Genuine interest in AI and where it can take work off a finance team, advantageous
The Offer
$110k to $130k + super depending on where you sit in the step up to supervision, one day per week working from home with ad hoc flexibility beyond that. You walk away from this role with your first genuine supervisory record, a close you own end to end, and the experience of building a finance process inside a private equity backed group rather than maintaining someone else's.
