The Nursing Unit Manager (NUM) is responsible for the clinical leadership, operational management, and professional development of the nursing team at Brightwell Health.
This role ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centred care across all services including consultations, procedural care, and recovery, while supporting Brightwell Health’s reputation for excellence in sexual and reproductive healthcare.
The NUM plays a critical leadership role in maintaining compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards, fostering a positive team culture, driving operational efficiency, and contributing to ongoing growth and innovation within the clinic.

Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Leadership & Governance
- Provide strong, visible leadership to the nursing team across all clinic activities
- Ensure delivery of best-practice clinical care aligned with current evidence and guidelines
- Oversee clinical protocols, policies, and continuous quality improvement activities
- Contribute to the development, review, and implementation of policies and procedures
- Maintain compliance with accreditation standards and regulatory requirements
- Lead incident management, clinical audits, and risk mitigation strategies
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
2. Operational Management
- Oversee daily nursing operations to ensure efficient clinic flow and service delivery
- Coordinate staffing, rostering, and skill mix in line with clinic demand
- Work collaboratively with Administration, the Business Manager, and Directors to optimise patient experience and operational efficiency
- Ensure effective utilisation of procedure lists, recovery spaces, and nursing resources
- Identify and implement workflow improvements to enhance productivity and patient care
3. Team Leadership & Development
- Lead recruitment, onboarding, and retention of nursing staff
- Provide mentoring, coaching, and performance management support
- Conduct regular performance reviews and support professional development planning
- Foster a positive, accountable, and high-performing team culture
- Support staff wellbeing and proactively manage workplace issues
- Encourage ongoing learning and professional growth within the nursing team
4. Patient Experience & Safety

5. Clinical Education & Training
- Identify training needs and coordinate ongoing education programs
- Ensure competency in procedural nursing, sedation support, and emergency response
- Support upskilling in specialised clinical areas including reproductive and women’s health
- Monitor and maintain mandatory training compliance across the nursing team
- Facilitate orientation and competency assessment for new staff members
6. Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with Directors, GPs, specialists, and allied health professionals to support clinical service delivery
- Collaborate with administration leadership to align clinical and operational priorities
- Liaise with external providers including pathology, pharmacy, equipment suppliers, and service contractors
- Contribute to strategic planning, service development, and growth initiatives
7. Resource & Financial Management
- Oversee clinical stock, equipment, and consumables in collaboration with the Clinic Nurse Coordinator
- Monitor stock usage and minimise wastage
- Contribute to budgeting and cost-control initiatives within the nursing unit
- Support efficient billing practices in collaboration with the Administration Team
- Ensure equipment servicing, maintenance, and compliance requirements are met
8. Clinical Duties
The NUM is expected to maintain a hands-on clinical presence and provide clinical support where required to ensure safe and efficient service delivery. Duties may include:
- Assisting with procedures including Implanon insertion/removal, IUD procedures, iron infusions, and skin excisions
- Providing triage support (phone and walk-in), baseline observations, and point-of-care testing
- Administering medications as directed by Medical Officers
- Supporting minor procedures and providing chaperoning during examinations
- Communicating results and providing attendance certificates as directed
- Maintaining accurate clinical documentation within Best Practice and Xestro systems
- Assisting with infection control, sterilisation processes, and equipment checks
- Providing clinical coverage during periods of staff shortage or increased demand
Selection Criteria
Essential
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA
- Significant experience in procedural, surgical, acute care, or day procedure settings
- Demonstrated leadership or management experience within a clinical environment
- Strong understanding of clinical governance, accreditation, and quality frameworks
- Excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to lead and motivate a multidisciplinary team
Desirable
- Experience in sexual and reproductive health or women’s health
- Previous experience within private practice or day procedure environments
- Qualifications in leadership and/or management (or working towards)
- Experience with procedural sedation, recovery, or theatre nursing
