We are seeking a site editor, international desk to join our Editorial team, to edit key Guardian homepages between approximately midnight and 8am UK time and also to commission, edit and produce international stories as part of the International team in Sydney.
This role is being offered on full-time 15-month fixed term basis, working on a seven-day roster with early starts and/or late finishes. This role is open to candidates based in either Sydney or Melbourne.
In this role you will…

Edit the Guardian home pages - including UK, US and Europe sites - updating and refreshing as required to keep them relevant to their target audiences
- Work with the International news team to help ensure key international stories are commissioned, edited, subbed and launched while UK and US teams are offline
- Support the Guardian UK night editor and night production editors (online) in London when they are present
- Live blog and write news stories when necessary
- Work with the UK newsletters team on production of the First Edition newsletter if required
- Cover news in the Asia-Pacific region

Act as weekend International duty editor on rotation

Be available to the New York and West Coast offices as well as North America correspondents to handle late-breaking US stories, updates and edits to US stories and the home page, as directed by the International editor in Sydney

Monitor UK morning news sources and adjust the site to the UK news agenda
- Brief and hand over to the Guardian digital editors and international and national desks in London at the end of the shift
- Monitor the news wires, other websites/TV channels for international and UK news stories
- Commission foreign correspondents when a story breaks on their patch, and serve as a contact point for them during UK out-of-office hours as directed by the International news editor in Sydney

Come up with ideas for stories and devise innovative and interesting ways of telling them

Work closely with the Guardian Australia team to ensure key stories are covered and adapt to changing news priorities
- Ensure all potential legal issues resolved prior to publishing

Liaise with audience team to optimise timing, keywords, page furniture and story placement to maximise traffic
You'll bring….
Knowledge and experience

Significant journalistic experience, with an excellent grasp of international news. Experience in UK and US news preferable
- Experience of working in a fast changing and high-pressure environment, preferably on a news website

Understanding of the unique time pressures involved in digital journalism
