Metro is seeking a highly experienced
General Manager Engineering to lead engineering advisory services, assurance, change management and system integration across one of Australia’s most complex metropolitan rail networks. Reporting to the Chief Engineer, this senior leadership role will provide authoritative engineering advice, lead a large multidisciplinary team and ensure engineering decisions support safe, reliable and sustainable railway operations.
In this role, you will lead engineering advisory services across the full asset lifecycle, ensuring accountabilities, expectations and technical standards are clearly defined across engineering disciplines. You will champion a coherent and integrated approach to engineering advice, supporting the organisation to identify and manage risks that affect safety, operability, maintainability and long-term network performance.
You will also lead the development and continuous improvement of engineering assurance frameworks, ensuring assurance activities remain independent, credible, risk-based and outcomes-focused. Working constructively with project and maintenance delivery teams, you will support the identification, prioritisation, escalation and resolution of systemic engineering and asset risks.
A key focus of the role will be the management of change and system integration. You will ensure new or modified assets, systems and technologies are safely integrated into the network, with change managed in accordance with the Engineering Management System and applicable regulatory obligations.
You will act as a key engineering interface with internal and external stakeholders, including delivery partners and regulators, and will represent the Chief Engineer where required on complex engineering, assurance and asset-related matters.
-
Lead the delivery of high-quality engineering advisory services across major projects, renewals, operations and maintenance.
-
Ensure engineering advice appropriately balances technical rigour, independence, pragmatism and business outcomes.
-
Lead and continuously improve engineering assurance frameworks that are credible, proportionate and risk-based.
-
Oversee the identification, escalation and resolution of systemic engineering and asset risks across engineering disciplines, projects and maintenance delivery teams.
-
Ensure effective processes are in place for engineering change, system integration and the safe introduction of new or modified assets, systems and technologies.
-
Provide authoritative advice to senior leaders on complex engineering, assurance and asset matters.
-
Build trusted relationships with internal stakeholders, delivery partners, project alliances, government agencies and regulators.
-
Lead a large professional engineering team, fostering a client-first, high-performance and continuous improvement culture.
-
Develop internal talent and strengthen business continuity by building capability across critical engineering roles.
-
Manage budgets, compliance obligations and functional responsibilities in support of Metro’s rail operator accreditation and Franchise Agreement commitments.
You are an accomplished senior engineering leader with deep experience in complex, safety-critical and highly regulated operating environments. You bring strong technical credibility, sound professional judgement and the ability to influence through expertise, reasoned advice and trusted relationships.
You will have extensive senior-level experience as a professional engineer, preferably within rail or a comparable infrastructure environment, and demonstrated experience operating at General Manager, Executive or equivalent level with accountability for engineering, assurance or asset stewardship functions.
You are confident working across complex stakeholder groups, including executives, engineers, operators, maintainers, project leaders, delivery partners and regulators. You can translate complex engineering issues into clear, meaningful advice for non-technical decision-makers and are comfortable operating in environments characterised by competing priorities, delivery pressure and high public accountability.
-
A tertiary qualification in Engineering or a closely related discipline, meeting eligibility requirements for corporate membership of Engineers Australia or an equivalent recognised professional body.
-
Extensive experience in complex, safety-critical and highly regulated operating environments.
-
Demonstrated experience leading engineering, assurance or asset stewardship functions at senior leadership level.
-
Proven ability to provide authoritative engineering advice across major projects, operations and asset lifecycles.
-
Strong systems-thinking capability and the ability to anticipate operational, maintenance and safety impacts of engineering decisions.
-
Extensive experience leading technical assurance, engineering change, risk management or system integration activities.
-
The ability to maintain assurance independence while constructively supporting business delivery.
-
Strong stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to influence senior leaders, government agencies and regulatory bodies.
-
A leadership style grounded in technical credibility, integrity, collaboration and active engagement.
Chartered Professional Engineer status, or equivalent professional standing, is highly desirable. Postgraduate qualifications or formal development in asset management, systems engineering, safety, risk or governance would also be well regarded where they strengthen practical, real-world application.
This is an opportunity to take on a highly influential leadership role within a complex, essential transport environment. You will help shape engineering outcomes that support safe railway operations, long-term asset stewardship and the continued reliability of Melbourne’s metropolitan rail network.
At Metro, our values of Safely Always, Caring, One Team, Dependable and Make a Difference guide how we work and how we lead. As General Manager Engineering, you will be expected to role model these values and build a culture of professionalism, collaboration, inclusion and continuous improvement.
If you are a highly credible engineering leader with the experience, judgement and leadership capability to influence complex technical outcomes across a safety-critical operating environment, we would welcome your application.
