What you'll be doing
To allow Trainees to complete the requirements of training for Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, as specified in the College training program, whilst providing anaesthetic care to patients under the supervision of a nominated Consultant. This position allows for the development of skills required for independent practice in anaesthesia, particularly in the areas of major abdominal surgery and cases associated with massive blood loss, as well as the opportunity to undertake non-clinical sessions for education, research and leadership roles as appropriate.
All decision-making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the medical officer’s skills, knowledge, and experience. The Trainee will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance and at the discretion of a supervising Consultant. All patients managed within SLHD are under the direct care of a Specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care should be clearly communicated with the Specialist responsible.
It is expected that the Trainee will achieve the following during their year in this fellowship position:
- To gain skills in the pre-operative assessment and preparation of patients for peritonectomy and pelvic exenteration surgery.
- To gain experience in the administration of anaesthesia for peritonectomy and pelvic exenteration surgery - including use of advanced haemodynamic monitoring and managements of major blood loss.
- To gain experience in the treatment of acute and chronic pain related to peritonectomy, pelvic exenteration surgery, and other surgeries associated with chronic post-surgical pain.
- To gain experience in the insertion epidural catheters and management of thoracic epidural analgesia.
- To participate in research activities related to peritonectomy and pelvic exenteration surgery.
- To participate in after-hours rosters including the Obstetrics roster if required.
- To fulfil the educational and training requirements for trainees as a Provisional Fellow (as specified by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists).
- Participation in Medical Officer & Departmental teaching sessions.
- To learn good presentation skills through education and research presentations and QA activities such as morbidity/mortality reviews and critical incident reports.
- To gain experience in providing support for junior colleagues and peers.
