About Al Zahra College
Al Zahra College is an Independent, Full Continuum IB, Islamic School in Arncliffe, Sydney, educating students from Preschool to Year 12. We are committed to providing a safe, supportive and well-presented environment for our students, staff and wider community.
About the Role
We are seeking a reliable and safety-conscious General Assistant to join our team on a part-time basis, working 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, Monday to Friday. You will support the day-to-day operation of the College — carrying out general handyman and maintenance duties, overseeing the cleanliness of the school in liaison with our contracted cleaning company, replenishing amenities for staff and students, and conducting regular safety walk-arounds of the grounds and buildings.
This role is classified as Level 2 or Level 3 under the applicable Enterprise Agreement, depending on the experience, skills and qualifications you bring — so candidates with relevant trade, facilities or security-related background are encouraged to apply, as are those newer to this type of work.
This is a great opportunity for a practical, hands-on person who takes pride in keeping a school safe, well-maintained and welcoming, and who is comfortable following procedures to raise any Work Health and Safety (WHS) concerns with our WHS Officer.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general handyman duties and minor maintenance and repairs around the College
- Move furniture and equipment for classes, events and set-ups
- Oversee the cleanliness of the school and liaise with the contracted cleaning company as needed
- Replenish amenities for staff and students
- Conduct regular safety patrols of the College grounds and facilities
- Respond to alarms, follow emergency procedures and prepare incident reports as required
- Follow the College’s procedures for raising WHS issues and hazards with the WHS Officer
What We’re Looking For
- Sound practical skills in maintenance, handyman tasks and cleaning oversight
- A safety-conscious approach and the ability to follow instructions and procedures
- Good communication skills, punctuality and reliability
- A valid Working with Children Check (WWCC), or willingness to obtain one
- Applicants must have the right to work in Australia. Please note that visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
A current First Aid certificate, a Certificate II or III in a relevant field (e.g. asset maintenance, facilities operations), and previous experience in a school or similar environment are desirable but not essential.
Why Join Us
- Be part of a warm, values-driven school community
- Enjoy manageable part-time hours suited to a flexible daily routine
- Play a visible, valued role in keeping our students and staff safe every day
Al Zahra College is committed to the safety and wellbeing of children. All successful applicants will be required to undergo relevant background checks, including a Working with Children Check, prior to appointment.
