Friends of Our Cafe on Mt Alexander Road is an established, fast paced cafe with a loyal local following. We are a small team that runs like a family. We look after each other, we back each other on a busy service, and we want everyone who walks through the kitchen door to leave a better cook than when they arrived.
The role
We are looking for a reliable full time Chef who thrives when the tickets stack up and still cares about what goes on the plate. You will:
- Run and support daily service across breakfast and lunch in a high volume kitchen Prepare and cook food to a consistent standard, every plate, every time Apply sound cooking techniques and confident knife skills across all sections Handle daily prep so every station is stocked and ready before service starts Oversee ordering, stock control and correct stock rotation to keep waste down Assist with menu costing and portion control to keep the kitchen running profitably Take responsibility for the day to day running of the kitchen, including opening setup and close down Contribute ideas to menu development and specials Work alongside and mentor junior kitchen staff
What you will bring
Skills and qualifications
- Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery or higher At least one year of full time experience as a chef in a busy, fast paced kitchen Solid food preparation and cooking technique across a varied menu Strong knife skills and an efficient, clean workflow Practical experience with menu costing and stock control
Personal and professional attributes
- A strong work ethic, with punctuality and reliability you can be held to Ability to work independently and as part of a tight team Excellent time management and the judgement to prioritise under pressure Problem solving skills when a delivery is short or a station goes down Clear, respectful communication with kitchen and front of house Pride in your personal presentation and in your section A genuine interest in becoming the best version of yourself
Safety and compliance
- Sound knowledge of OH&S obligations in a commercial kitchen Current food safety and hygiene practice First aid awareness and the ability to identify and respond to immediate safety risks Full working rights in Australia
