The role
Capricorn is seeking a dynamic professional to champion risk management, compliance and assurance across our operations in Australia and New Zealand. The Senior Risk & Assurance Officer supports Capricorn's Risk, Assurance and Compliance function by providing practical Line 2 advice, oversight, assurance and credible challenge across operational risk, compliance risk, controls, governance and assurance activities. The role assists in translating Capricorn's enterprise risk strategy, risk appetite, assurance priorities and Line 2 operating model into practical business outcomes that strengthen risk ownership, improve decision-making quality and support organisational resilience.
What you'll do
- Support the development and improvement of Capricorn's risk framework, policies, methodologies and guidance, aligned to the enterprise risk strategy and Line 2 model.
- Support the embedment and operationalisation of risk appetite by helping business stakeholders understand thresholds, escalation requirements, treatment expectations and risk acceptance responsibilities, while monitoring indicators, challenging trends, breaches and actions, and preparing targeted reporting and insights to support consistent, risk-informed decision making across Capricorn.
- Provide independent Line 2 advice, assurance and challenge over risks, controls, issues, incidents, obligations and governance.
- Deliver assigned Line 2 assurance activities, including scoping, planning, fieldwork, evidence assessment, reporting, validation and follow-up.
- Oversee and challenge issue and incident, including classification, rating, root cause, escalation, timely actioning and closure evidence, while preserving Line 1 accountability for remediation.
- Provide independent, evidence-based challenge on material incidents, privacy/data incidents, member impacts, remediation and potential reportable situations.
- Prepare and contribute to clear, balanced, forward-looking and targeted insights on material risk movements, risk appetite outcomes, emerging risks, control effectiveness testing (design and operating effectiveness), incidents, issues, regulatory change, assurance findings and management action progress for management, executive, Board and Committee forums under the direction of the Head of Risk, Assurance and Compliance. This includes contribution to creation relevant board and committee reports and papers.
- Coach risk owners, control owners, obligation owners and process owners on practical risk management, control evidence, issue/action quality and escalation standards.
What you'll bring
- Solid understanding of risk, control, compliance and assurance concepts, including ISO 31000.
- Strong understanding of the Three Lines Model and accountabilities across Lines 1, 2 and 3.
- Practical understanding of assurance planning, development and delivery.
- Strong facilitation and presentation skills, including risk and control workshops.
- Minimum five years' experience, preferably in financial services, insurance, Big 4, risk advisory, assurance, compliance or another regulated environment, including at least three years in risk, compliance, assurance, controls or governance.
- Experience in Line 2 oversight, assurance, control review, issue/action management, risk reporting or maturity uplift.
- Tertiary qualifications in Risk, Compliance, Business, Commerce, Finance, Auditing and/or Law.
- Membership, or eligibility for membership, of a relevant risk, compliance, audit or governance body is desirable.
