Billabong Sanctuary is seeking an experienced and motivated Head of Reptiles to join our leadership team.
Reporting to the Senior Ranger and Wildlife Curator, you will lead the daily operations of the Reptile Department, ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare, workplace safety, staff development and visitor engagement.
This is a hands-on leadership role suited to an exceptional wildlife professional who is passionate about conservation, education and mentoring others where no 2 days are the same.
Key Responsibilities
As Head of Reptiles you will:
- Lead, mentor and develop Rangers, trainees, volunteers and work experience students.
- Oversee daily operations of the Reptile Department.
- Maintain exceptional standards of reptile husbandry, welfare and habitat management.
- Deliver engaging wildlife presentations and educational programs.
- Coordinate team activities and support operational efficiency.
- Assist with recruitment, induction, training and performance development.
- Ensure compliance with WHS, animal welfare and biosecurity requirements.
- Maintain accurate animal records using ZIMS (Species360).
- Assist with preventative healthcare programs and emergency animal management.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the Sanctuary.
What we’re looking for
You are a positive and safety-focused leader who leads by example, builds respectful workplace culture, and remains calm and decisive under pressure.
You will have:
- Qualifications in Reptile and Venomous Snake Handling.
- Demonstrated experience with the safe handling, feeding and restraint of crocodiles and venomous reptiles.
- Certificate III or IV in Captive Animals (or equivalent) is highly regarded.
- Experience with reptile behaviour assessment and husbandry.
- Experience using ZIMS (Species360) is highly regarded.
- Strong knowledge of animal welfare, WHS and biosecurity requirements.
- Experience delivering wildlife presentations and educational programs.
- Proven leadership, coaching and team development skills.
