Paid Infantry Soldier Training – Australian Army

The Australian Army Infantry Soldier pathway, known in-service as Rifleman, is a full-time role for people who want to challenge themselves, work in a close-knit team, and do something active, meaningful and out of the ordinary.
No prior military experience is required. You will receive the training needed to become a capable Army soldier and develop the physical, mental and practical skills required for the role.
Pay and Benefits
You are paid while you train.
Starting salary:
$60,517 per annum
plus 16.4% superannuation
Once trained, salary increases to at least:
$82,322 per annum
plus 16.4% superannuation
This role may also attract additional allowances, including field allowance.

What Infantry Soldiers Do
As an Infantry Soldier, you will become part of a highly trained team responsible for supporting Army operations in demanding environments.
Training and employment may involve:
- Patrolling and surveillance
- Security tasks for Army units and key assets
- Offensive and defensive operations
- Operating as part of a close-knit team
- Working alongside other Army corps and capabilities
- Humanitarian assistance missions
- International training, advise and assist missions
- Developing physical strength, discipline and mental resilience
Specialist Opportunities
Over time, Infantry Soldiers may have opportunities to specialise in areas such as:
- Reconnaissance
- Sniper
- Mortars
- Heavy weapons
- Other combat-related specialist skills

Entry Requirements
Applicants generally need to:
- Be an Australian citizen or eligible Australian permanent resident
- Be at least 17 years old to enter the ADF
- Have a checkable background
- Have completed Year 10
- Be reasonably fit and healthy
- Have no suspended or cancelled driver’s licence, if they hold one
You can usually start your application from 16.5 years old.
