The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As a valued member of the Care & Protection/Family Law Practice, you will lead operational delivery of high-quality, culturally safe legal services for Aboriginal clients. You will support practice leadership through risk management, service improvement, and strategic advice on policy and operations. Each day, you will:
- Provide high-quality legal advice and culturally safe representation in Care & Protection and Family Law matters.
- Support clients through legal processes, court appearances, and resolution of complex legal issues.
- Manage casework, workload allocation, court diaries, and accurate file and document administration.
- Assist with legal practice delivery including preparation of court documents and liaison with courts and agencies.
- Contribute to legal knowledge sharing, policy development, and continuous improvement of service delivery.
- Engage respectfully with communities and travel as required to support regional service delivery and outreach.
Your Story & Strengths
You are a skilled legal service leader with experience in Care & Protection and Family Law, delivering high-quality legal advice and representation in complex matters. You lead staff, casework, and resources to ensure effective, compliant service delivery. You also support service improvement and provide culturally safe, client-focused legal services for Aboriginal clients, families, and communities. Key strengths include:
- Hold a current NSW Practising Certificate with at least 5 years’ experience in Care & Protection, Family Law, or related areas
- Demonstrate experience representing Aboriginal clients in Care & Protection and/or Family Law matters
- Bring strong leadership capability, including supervision, staff management, and legal practice oversight
- Possess advanced knowledge of relevant legislation, case law, and court processes to support effective advocacy
- Demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal, negotiation, and workload management skills in a legal environment
- Demonstrate commitment to WHS, ethical practice, and cultural safety, and hold the required driver’s licence and mandatory checks
