The Emergency Medicine term at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) offers an exceptional opportunity for junior doctors to develop expertise in the assessment and management of acute and complex presentations within a busy tertiary referral and major trauma centre.
As part of a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, trainees gain hands-on experience managing a broad range of medical, surgical, paediatric and trauma presentations, while working alongside experienced Emergency Physicians, specialty teams and critical care services. The term provides exposure to high-acuity patients, advanced resuscitation, trauma care and rapid clinical decision-making in a fast-paced environment.
RNSH is a major referral centre for Northern Sydney and New South Wales, providing specialist services including major trauma, neurosurgery, spinal cord injury, burns and critical care. This diverse case mix offers unparalleled learning opportunities and exposure to complex emergency presentations not commonly seen in smaller facilities.

What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of Stage 2 - 4 Trainee in Emergency Medicine is to provide high quality medical care under appropriate supervision to undifferentiated patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
Trainees undertaking the care of medical patients should ensure that they operate within their own level of expertise within a collaborative clinical care model and to seek consultation with their colleagues when appropriate. Advanced Trainees work under a level of supervision according to their competence in the following activities:
- Taking a leadership role in coordinating the admission, assessment, management, and discharge planning of patients
- Communicating assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient’s care
- Communicating with the patient / family regarding the patient’s condition and management plans
- Coordinating diagnostic tests and consultations with other medical specialists
- Arranging the patient discharge process and liaising with local medical officers and community based care modalities for optimal post discharge care

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Demonstrated ability to work with appropriate independence, commensurate with a level of a Specialist Trainee, within a supervised complex clinical environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
- Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and others members of the health care team
- Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
- Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self education.
- Previous experience in and willingness to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training.
Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specific Diseases
To be employed by NSW Health, applicants must provide evidence of vaccination and comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy Directive (PD2024_015). Compliance with this policy, including any amendments made from time to time, is a mandatory condition of employment.
Applicants will be required to provide acceptable evidence of their vaccination status, immunity, and any other occupational health requirements relevant to the position. Evidence must be submitted and assessed in accordance with NSW Health requirements prior to commencement.

This position requires a Working With Children Check (WWCC) clearance issued by Service NSW. A current and valid WWCC is a mandatory requirement for appointment to this role.
