Primary objective
To provide support, information / training to Aboriginal people and communities to address and respond to sexual assault.
Supporting Aboriginal victim/survivors of sexual assault in the most culturally appropriate manner.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Plan and deliver support to adult and child survivors of sexual assault and to non-offending partners and family members
of survivors; with particular focus on clients of Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander background.
2. Liaise with Aboriginal communities to promote SARC services, identify community needs in relation to SARC services
and facilitate SARC service delivery.
3. Increase community capacity to respond to sexual assault by working with communities to identify skills, services and
structures needed locally to prevent sexual assault, reduce the risk of sexual assault and respond appropriately to sexual
assault; and assist communities to obtain these skill, services and structures.
4. Liaise with other service providers to ensure provision of appropriate and coordinated service delivery to SARC clients.
5. Provide expert cultural advice to the SARC service in regard to all aspects of SARC service delivery including the planning
and delivery of SARC training and information.
6. Participate in SARC on-call roster, meetings, case conferences and supervision.
7. Participate in the coordination and facilitation of support groups as part of a recovery process as appropriate.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A knowledge and understanding of cultural issues; family and community dynamics and relationships and complexities as
well as the political sensitivities of Aboriginal communities particularly in regard to sexual assault and services to victims
of sexual assault and their families.
2. Experience of living within the framework of Aboriginal culture, values and lifestyles and representing these Aboriginal
perspectives.
3. Knowledge of and experience in the provision of crisis and ongoing support to victims of sexual assault.
4. Skills and experience in communicating information, skills and knowledge across cultures e.g. between indigenous and
non-indigenous people.
5. Knowledge of and experience in working effectively in and with communities, particularly in remote locations, to provide
services to individuals, families and the community as well as developing local response capacity.
6. Skills and experience in liaising, consulting and working cooperatively with government and non-government agencies.
7. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team to achieve positive and organisational outcomes.
Desirable
1. Degree, Diploma, Certificate, AHP qualifications or work-based training in sexual assault, family support, training,
community development or a related area.
