The ICT Systems Test Engineer is responsible for specifying, developing and executing test plans, test cases and test scripts to validate the behaviour, functionality, reliability and integrity of ICT systems, applications, integrations and supporting platforms. The role ensures systems are tested against agreed requirements, quality standards and operational expectations before release into production or client use.
Working across service delivery, engineering, project, transition and support teams, the role reduces operational and client risk by applying disciplined testing practices, clear defect management and evidence-based release validation. This includes functional, regression, integration, system and operational acceptance testing, together with accurate reporting of test outcomes, defects, risks and recommendations to support informed release and service decisions.
Key Accountabilities
Systems Testing & Quality Assurance
Analyse business requirements, technical specifications, acceptance criteria and system design documentation to define test scope, test conditions, dependencies, risks and expected outcomes.
Specify, develop and maintain test plans, test cases, test scripts, test data and test evidence for ICT systems, applications, integrations, service management tools and operational platforms.
Execute manual and, where appropriate, automated testing activities across functional, regression, integration, system, smoke, sanity, user acceptance and operational readiness testing.
Test the behaviour, functionality, performance, reliability and integrity of systems to confirm they operate as intended and meet agreed business, client, security and service requirements.
Identify, investigate, document and track defects, faults and unexpected system behaviours, including clear reproduction steps, screenshots or logs, expected versus actual outcomes, severity, impact and recommended priority.
Perform defect re-testing and regression testing to validate fixes, confirm no downstream impacts have been introduced and support release readiness decisions.
Use testing tools, defect management platforms, ticketing systems and service data to record test execution, manage defects, monitor progress and provide accurate reporting to stakeholders.
Support change, release and transition activities by providing testing input, quality observations, risk assessments and evidence-based recommendations for go/no-go decisions.
Collaborate with engineers, developers, service desk, project managers, product owners and client-facing teams to clarify requirements, reproduce defects, validate fixes and ensure testing reflects real operational use cases.
Maintain traceability between requirements, test scenarios, test execution results and defect closure to support auditability, quality assurance and continuous improvement.
Review incident trends, recurring support issues and failed changes to identify gaps in test coverage and recommend improvements to system reliability, release quality and service outcomes.
Contribute to the development and improvement of testing standards, templates, test packs, regression suites, knowledge articles and release validation practices.
Skills & Qualifications:
Relevant ICT testing experience, ideally in systems testing, application testing, quality assurance, service transition or managed technology environments.
Strong understanding of testing methods, including test planning, test case design, test execution, regression testing, integration testing, system testing and defect lifecycle management.
Ability to produce clear test artefacts, including test plans, test scripts, test cases, test data, test evidence, defect reports, release validation notes and quality summaries.
Hands-on experience testing ICT systems, applications, integrations or service management platforms, with the ability to assess functionality, reliability, usability and operational readiness.
Experience documenting defects clearly and accurately, including reproduction steps, expected versus actual outcomes, severity, impact, screenshots, logs and supporting evidence.
Working knowledge of ITSM and change processes, preferably ITIL-aligned, and practical experience using ticketing or defect management systems such as ServiceNow, Jira, Azure DevOps or equivalent.
Strong technical literacy across Windows environments, Microsoft 365, networking fundamentals, identity and access concepts, endpoint environments, cloud services and common enterprise applications.
Ability to analyse requirements and technical documentation to identify test scenarios, dependencies, edge cases, quality risks and downstream operational impacts.
Exposure to test automation or automated testing tools is desirable, including the ability to support repeatable validation activities and improve regression coverage over time.
SFIA competency alignment, such as TEST — Testing, with demonstrated capability to design, execute, record and report testing activities in accordance with agreed standards.
Relevant qualifications or certifications in information technology, computer science, systems testing, quality assurance or related disciplines are desirable.
