Primary objective
This position is responsible for coordinating and providing a culturally appropriate Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) service to clients,
their families, carers, and the wider community. It works alongside the Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) team to deliver and
coordinate AOD care in remote primary health settings for the residents of Groote Eylandt, including the communities of Angurugu,
Alyangula, and Umbakumba.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Coordinate the workflow of a small team of Alcohol and Other Drug workers in a remote locality.
2. Collaborate and liaise with other health professionals, agencies and community organisations to ensure a multidisciplinary and
inter-sectoral approach to the planning, implementation and evaluation of Alcohol and Other Drug programs across the health
service.
3. Provide a range of Alcohol and Other Drug treatment options, including brief intervention, case management and withdrawal
support, as well as pathways to access rehabilitation services.
4. Develop culturally appropriate health promotion campaigns in the community in relation to Alcohol and Other Drugs using
Primary Health Care and Community Development frameworks.
5. Participate in, and encourage, education and professional development in Alcohol and Other Drugs to health centre staff and
community stakeholders.
6. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
7. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated extensive experience working in the Alcohol and Other Drug sector, with the ability to undertake assessment,
case management, and provide harm minimisation strategies for people experiencing substance misuse and their families.
2. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary team-building skills, with the ability to interact effectively and lead
a team of people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
3. Demonstrated experience and confidence in liaising with stakeholders and coordinating meetings and groups to support
collaborative and sustainable change.
4. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver a range of culturally appropriate health promotion and education programs in both
community and clinical settings.
5. Demonstrated highly developed written and verbal communication skills, including report writing.
6. Eligible to hold a Northern Territory driver’s licence, with experience driving a manual vehicle, and the willingness to travel to
remote communities by 4WD and light aircraft.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualification in Behavioural or Social Sciences, or Alcohol and Other Drugs certificate.
