The opportunity
We are seeking a Senior Technical Writer to support the Battlespace Communications Systems (BCS) Franchise. In this Brisbane-based role you will develop, analyse, collect, and maintain system support technical data across multiple subsystems and for multiple customers. You will collaborate with the BCS Technical Publications Execution Lead and program Subject Matter Experts to deliver high-quality documentation, lead quality assurance activities, and drive documentation standards across subsystems to meet complex, cross-customer requirements.
What you'll do
- Develop, analyse, collect, and maintain system support technical data elements and specifications across multiple subsystems and
- Prepare and maintain comprehensive Operating and Maintenance documentation for communications systems/components and software; ensure cross-customer applicability and configuration.
- Lead quality assurance, in-process reviews, and validation of technical data; drive continuous improvement of documentation standards and processes.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, logistics) to gather inputs, validate content, and resolve complex technical issues; represent the organization in external forums as needed.
- Identify and implement opportunities for process standardization, data governance, and documentation practices (e.g., S1000D, markup languages); mentor and guide junior staff where applicable.
Experience/Qualifications
Essential
- 5+ years of experience developing end-user documentation in engineering/technical environments, across multiple subsystems or customer programs.
- S1000D experience; XML, SGML, or other markup languages.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills enabling effective interaction with project teams, and internal customers.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with general direction, taking ownership of approach, milestones, and deliverables.
- Ability to work in a safety-sensitive and security-conscious environment within a Defence context.
- Applicants must be Australian Citizens to meet defence security requirements.
Desirable
- Experience with logistics/supportability analyses.
- Background in software development, communications infrastructure, or networking equipment.
- Current NV1 security clearance.
